MDE Columbia University 2021

Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

I would also love to know any advice, tips, and tricks you all may have for this year's application!

Hey, I am happy to help you. I'm now second semester MDE and DNP bound. Can't help you with applications other than advising you to be earnest. I recognize how frustrating that is to hear. My best advise is to be earnest (there is no right answer) and have everyone you know that you like and/or respect and/or know in any capacity read your essays. Like, if you have a brilliant doorperson, don't overlook them. Obviously, be careful. But, my essays were very solid. I think thats why I got my acceptance and also my scholarship. I'm not sure I know how DM's work on this but I'll keep an eye out  for an email notification if you want to follow up. Best of luck! x

Hello! People who got accepted in the first round last year - when did Columbia contact you regarding sending in your fall grades? Thanks ?

Help! I am in this exact same boat right now.. one year later. Accepted at NYU and waiting on Columbia. How did it work out for you?? I am frozen as to what to do. Is it a bad idea to reach out to admissions and ask for my Columbia decision early?

I’m in Columbia’s current MDE (graduate in august ‘22). I can guarantee you Columbia will not give you an admissions decision early. If you are between many programs like most of us were at one time, the only option is to apply to all and to pay to hold your seat places once you get in. Columbia said there were over 2000 applicants for the 180-200 MDE seats for the current class. 
 

in terms of BSN vs MSN it all depends on your career goals. Are you wanting to be a bedside nurse for awhile? Same starting pay no matter on your degree. Are you wanting to advance into hospital leadership? You will ultimately need a masters at some point. Do you want to become an NP or DNP? Columbia has the option to continue on to DNP, or if you want an NP, it’s faster to get once you have a masters.

Leah thank you for replying, and congratulations on Columbia! I had to pay NYU's deposit + tuition (30k..), with Columbia decisions out in February this year, I would have lost 30% of NYU tuition at that time- or about 8k- which is why I figured someone in admissions could hear me out and get my decision early if I explained the financial consequences of waiting one more month. 

I think I'm a strong applicant- I had a career in finance before changing careers to medicine. I ended up getting into two med schools and turned down my acceptances because I had a panic about work life balance/family/etc. and decided the DNP was a better track. IDK the 2000 applicants is discouraging so who know! My fear is coming across as pushy to admissions asking for an early decision so IDK ?

Also curious, did they accept anyone in your cohort to MDE/DNP in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care? Looks like they have switched the requirements to require 1 year of RN for that DNP program.

Hi!

Also class of '22. I know people who are in that program! You have an option to take a year and keep your spot in the program and get 1 year RN experience between MDE and DNP. 

I also found out about decisions in early January, so hopefully you'll be finding out soon! You sound like a good candidate so you might be eligible for academic scholarship too. Good luck!

Hello current MDE/DNP students! I was just admitted for the Summer 2023 MDE/DNP (Nurse-Midwifery) start and am hoping for insight on class schedules (generally, how many classroom hours per day/per week and how many hours/days/weeks for clinical), and hybrid vs in-person class formats. I'm trying to figure out whether/how I could commute to Columbia from another city (by plane) so that my kids can stay in their current location and schools, at least for my MDE year. 

Additional questions: 

(1) Do you know any students who commute from far away who might be willing to speak with me about their experiences? If so, I can DM you and pass along my email address.

(2) Do you know whether there is any kind of priority enrollment or other flexibility for students with young children? I'm really hoping to condense my in-person attendance to 2 or 3 days each week so that I can mostly take classes online and maximize the days each week that I can see my kids. 

(3) Are in-person clinicals typically every week of each semester, or are they condensed into portions of each semester? 

(4) Are there clinical intensives where students need to be present in-person 5 days/week? Are there weekend clinicals during the MDE program?

(5) Any other general thoughts about the program that you'd like to share?
