MDE Columbia University 2021

Published

Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

Specializes in Paramedic.

I was accepted into the MDE/FNP track!

I’m even more nervous after seeing happy accepted letter recipients and hopeful comebacks. I have not heard anything yet. My stats:

1- all pre-reqs A except Chemistry B. GPA 3.9

2- GPA 3.27 from a Marketing major.
3-  completed all the applications docs before submitting including LOR was lucky with them.
4- the time pieces were obviously difficult to do, but... am hoping I did better than what I think I did.
5- volunteer work with Sacred Heart and The Bowery mission but nothing in the health field.

Specializes in Phlebotomy | Patient Care Technician.

Since a lot of us are sharing stats ill share mine again. I also didn’t receive a decision letter yet.

GPA: 3.25

Prereqs: A- in Psychology- A&P 1,2 , Nutrition, Micro - B’s and Statistics- B+

I have a Bachelors in Patient Information Management which is considered a BBA (went to a private college) my background in college was strictly healthcare

I have experience as a patient care technician & phlebotomist. Also externed in an urgent care and medical records department at the hospital. All of these weren’t long term though.

I also have some experience volunteering giving free CPR lessons, volunteered with the charity Safe Horizon, helped out at local  shelters, and hospitals around the holidays.

I’ll jump in on this, I haven’t received a decision yet and these are my stats:

BA in Drama

GPA: 3.3

MFA in Acting

GPA: 3.9

Pre-reqs GPA: 3.97

I have no healthcare experience. I was hoping to get some while taking the pre-reqs but then the pandemic happened.

I'll hop on this too, I haven't received my decision yet:

-BS in Neuroscience (will be graduating this May)

-Overall GPA: 3.36

-Prereqs: psych A, nutrition A, stats A, microbio A, A&PI A-, and taking A&PII this semester
-I've been working for almost 2 years as a physical therapy aide in an outpatient rehab center and I have 1+ year of paid undergraduate research in dyslexia at my college.

I also transferred freshman year of undergrad and since my school is small, I have a bunch of classes/prereqs from a variety of different schools haha

I also have yet to receive my decision but:

- BSA in Nutrition with a Pre-Health Professions Certificate/Minor in Sociology (I also graduate in May)

- overall GPA (thus far): 3.24

-prereqs: psych- A, stats- B, anatomy- A, physiology- A, microbio-B, nutrition- A

- I worked as a CNA for like 6 months before college but had to stop working because I don't have a car with me at my university (LOL parking is expensive)

- I have quite a bit of volunteer experience and have done things such as volunteering at a local hospital for a few months, volunteering at a local food pantry and church to help give out food, and I've volunteered abroad with GMT in the Dominican Republic. In November I started working as a research assistant in a study testing the effects of increased protein in adolescents who don't typically eat breakfast. But that was postponed due to COVID but hopefully, I can go back this semester ☹️

- I transferred my first year of undergrad to my current university so I also have prereqs scattered around lmao

I applied to peds and I'm hoping for the best but I'm a little scared with my GPA ahah

Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to everyone waiting. I can add my stats, also. I'm still waiting for a decision.

Undergrad in political science: 3.5

Masters in nonprofit management/Healthy Policy from Columbia School of International Affairs: 3.5

Prereqs: Nutrition - B, Anatomy I and II - A, Microbiology - A. Finishing up Stats and Psychology in the next six weeks. Nervous about this hurting my chances.

Two years in the Finance Sourcing Dept at NY Presbyterian Hospital.

I spent ten years with Doctors without Borders in the field as an HR/Finance person in various medical programs. Last five years as a Director of Program Finance at an int'l org that raises money for water projects in developing countries.

No direct healthcare experience.

No optional essay. Video essay material seemed fine but my video presenting skills aren't great. Personal statements = who knows?

Volunteering experience is mostly as a foster parent for the past three years - two babies came from the NICU with some initial medical needs. Plus, some work with newly arrived asylum seekers.

References were three professional as its been a long time since I was in school. I'm nervous that will also hurt my application.

I'm not sure how much they want second career students/older students.

Specializes in pharmacy technician.

Long time lurker here. I was accepted into the MDE/DNP, PMHNP track! I'm so excited!!

Super excited to get into the MDE program today! Found this forum in combing this internet for more information on the program and am stoked to see other people as hype as I am! I can’t wait for the virtual info session on the 19th ?

Good luck to the folks still waiting, I understand the uneasiness. I am waitlisted at USF, and also accepted at Emory, but I think Columbia’s my top choice. As a trans person who grew up in NYC I’m pretty nervous about living in the south, even Atlanta, LOL. I’ve been living in Denver for years and would like to make my practice out here probably, but I am just so excited to be in an environment like Columbia to get my foundation.

My background: 3.67 BS public health from a private liberal arts school in Utah in 2017, prerequisites all done at community college in Denver,  worked healthcare advocacy nonprofits for 3 years, worked as a wilderness first responder on backcountry tips as well during that time period, coordinated a food pantry at a resource center for folks experiencing homelessness for 1.5 years, and have been a unit coordinator at a hospital for 1.5 years. My application was very clear about who I am and the queer-inclusive-holistic view I’m trying to bring to my practice ‘cause I’m not trying to go somewhere that doesn’t accept that and wow I’m still just reeling that they want me lmao!

I didn’t get an email today, so hopefully in the next round ??. My prerequisites A- A&P2 and Nutrition, B A&P 1, A Microbio, A Dev. Psych, and I’m currently retaking stats

my overall GPA 3.25. I volunteered in a HIIT Parkinson’s research at my undergrad and I also volunteered at my schools EMS for a couple years. But other than that I don’t have much healthcare experience.

Accepted into the MDE program! Had a 2.23 GPA before transferring (3 years), and currently a 3.98 at my new school (2 years) where I’ll be graduating from and have most of the prerequisites completed. Worked as an emergency department scribe in a level 2 trauma for 1 year, and completed my EMT-B training in NH.

Im also waiting for a decision. I saw somebody said that there are both acceptances and rejections in the first round, so I am glad that I still might have a chance to get into the second round. Though my boyfriend keeps on telling me they probably gave all the seats out in the first round and the second round might be a really small batch, I am still trying to keep my positivity during this waiting process.

Here is my not-so-impressive stats:

pre-reqs: Stats (A), Chem (A), Nutrition (B), physio (A), Lifespan (A), I am taking Microbio and anatomy this coming Spring 2021. Pre req GPA is around 3.8-3.9

undergrad:  UC Davis BA in economics. Really screwed up my grades in the first 3 quarters after transfering from a CC. First 3 quarters were around 3.0. Have been getting straight 4.0s for the past 2 quarters, pulling my GPA to a 3.36 when applying to CUSON.

LOR: 2 from professors and head of department I volunteered and worked, 1 professional from a director of an overseas COVID mask covering rescue program.

experience: 2-3 economics, non healthcare internships, stats tutor for a few months, annual bookfair volunteer for local bookstore for 7+ years, PICU volunteer for 3 months until covid hit, a bronze volunteer award, some deans list awards and math awards, but no direct healthcare experience.

PS and Video essay: I personally cried when reading my essays and my prerecorded video, I don't know if that is good enough. But my grades are definitely pulling me down.

Congrats to those who got in the first round, hope that we can meet in the future. T___T
