Did anyone apply to th enursing program at miami-dade? Have you gotten a response yet?
In the past, high pre-req GPA's DID correlate to a high chance success rate in nursing school. Today, a high GPA does not directly correlate to success in Nursing School. MDC as a nursing school is having to make some adjustments because of this fact. In recent years, they have started to see a sharp decline in their NCLEX scores....which has the school STRESSED.
Why is it that 2-3 years ago a student with a high GPA would do well in nursing school and not now? Who knows...but what the school has noticed is this:
1. The University of Miami accreditation scare due to rampant cheating in nursing school caused a huge stir....MDC has beefed exam security.
2. The average grades for pre-reqs has gone through the roof....while the retained education during those pre-reqs has gone through the floor.
3. NCLEX test plans are evolving.
After talking with one faculty member at school...I understand that the issue of cheating has really come under close scrutiny. The nursing school is going way over the top to STOP any and all cheating during exams. Professors that teach pre-reqs really haven't done anything to address cheating in their courses. Heck, I remember times when the professor would leave the room during an A&P exam. Now, do you think a little cheating in the pre-req environment may "inflate" those GPA's? Do you think those students have the base education to aid them through nursing school?
I remember applying to nursing school knowing that I was competing for a seat with people that had 4.0's based upon cheating. I know I did not cheat to get my 4.0...but had worked hard to earn it. As of now, MDC has no way to highlight the non-inflated or earned GPA's from the inflated or unearned GPA's. They are exploring the idea of using an entrance exam to try and weed some of these people out.
Let me tell you...nursing school WILL weed out those students that had an unearned GPA. On Monday we start in on Summer term and there will be a lot of missing students. There about 40% of the students that started second semester did not go on to the 3rd semester. Believe me....the school is wreathing with this loss rate.
I do think there a lot of students out there that have mediocre GPA's that would do quite well in Nursing School. Likewise, I KNOW there are a lot of 4.0 GPA students that have not made it. Believe me the school is noticing also...and is scrambling to make changes to address this.

I agree with you 100%
All nursing schools are very challenging. but having GPA of a 4.0 will not mean an automatic ticket to passing school then nclex-rn exam.
I am very happy for all of us that made it in my school. We were accepted to school by the waiting list, and out of 84 people that graduated in august of last year, only 4 failed the exam after taking it for the first time. so I think that is a 93% (not sure, I saw it recently on myflorida.com).
Anyways, I also saw that MDC scores were lower..... how can that be when they accept student's based on high GPA's?
BCC was very tough, very strict, and it was scary being there at some points. but regardless, they gave me a chance to conquer my dreams of becoming an RN. and in spite of having a few bumps and lumps down the road in my way towards becoming what I am now. I am very thankful to BCC, and I will have gratitude for them always.
So my advice to anyone that reads this, and doesnt have a 4.0 GPA
don't give up on your dreams of becoming an RN! There are lots of options out there on how to be an RN. and just because the school down the street does not take you in, there just may be another school an hour away that may be your ticket to success. Keep trying and trying and trying and you will make it, just like how I did.

I couldn't have said it better!!!!!
I understand you can not read correctly. All I know is that if you made it so will I. Nursing is not supposed to be easy, and it is not impossible. What I had written before was that what really counts is motivation. If you have motivation you need little else. Either way you need to better your way of putting things. something like "nursing school is hard, but if you work at it you will make it, and you will be a wonderful nurse." Nurses are supposed to know how to talk to people, and they are suppose to posses a bit of psychology to be able to communicate things. You do not have that ability.
Butterflyyessy,
she has expressed her opinion on MDC, you do not have to agree but you should respect her honesty. There is no need to belittle another because you disagree. Let us have rational conversation here and move along. I have read your posts and hers and I agree with both of you, and I do disagree too, however, I am in no position to bash you. Please show some respect to her.
My God! I told you to read again because I said motivation is more important than anything. More important than GPA or grades. I am not the first to go into nursing in my family. I can handle it. If you made it, I can do it. Believe me. I came to this sight for help, not for people to discourage me, and tell me nursing is too difficult, and on top of that, that my past har work means nothing.
Baptist and Jackson Memorial have a partnership program with MDC. Basically, Baptist and Jackson provided an additional venue for nursing students. You go to nursing school at thier facility. The curriculum is still MDC's and most of the professors are MDC's. Additionally, either hospital pays your tuition and gives you an allowances for uniforms and books. For your part, you agree to a two year employment contract with either Jackson or Baptist. It sounds like a fairly decent program. Us "regular" students bump into them from time to time on the medical campus....and the "scholars" seam to be pretty happy.
I decided not apply for the program because I have military benefits that are paying for my school....and I didn't want to lock myself into a two year program. My family looks forward to moving back to America after I graduate.
If you got the letter...CONGRATULATIONS!!! Like you said...it pretty much means you are in. You are in the upper cream of the crop as you might say. They only send the letter to students that otherwise qualify for the program...or would be competitive for the program.
Definitely drop us a line when you get you admissions letter. I am very curious as to when those go out.
Good luck...and again...congrats!!!
See you on campus.

Yay I got that lette you were talking about. I got it today. You were right about the school being under new leadership. I am so happy. I am half way there. Now I have to see if I did get accepted or what. This is scary. The suspense.
Hey Butterflyyessy,
After reading your post I decided to check my mailbox, and I also got a letter regarding an information session that I should attend. I turned in my application way back in the beginning of January and basically haven't thought very much about it again. But now, after receiving this letter, I'm getting anxious. I hope I'm actually accepted into the program.

to you it is.
and BTW I was maing a general statement, I was not writing to you. but when people are so self centered then they think everything is written about them or to them
