Did anyone apply to th enursing program at miami-dade? Have you gotten a response yet?
I was just wondering if any one knows what the average GPA to get into the nursing generic program at MDC? I have a 3.25 and I don't know if that is good enough? Can some one please help me stop being so stressed out about this!
I applied with a 3.3 in 2003 and kept applying because they told me I was an "elligible" student. and kept trying, ended up getting 5 rejection letters
Wow thanks for all the advise.
I really think I have a good chance of getting in. I believe that many students with a 3.5 have gotten in with no problem. I have a higher GPA, but none the less I am very nervous. I have been working very hard just to get in. I believe that when you do get in that it is very difficult, but I also believe that at least half the battle has been won. As in reference to the GPA and doing good in nursing I also believe you have to honestly want to be a nurse. I mean why would a student with a high GPA do bad in nursing? I understand that the courses are difficult, but I also believe that motivation is what really runs the students more than anything.
Hopefully I do good. I am really nervous, and the wait is nothing less than annoying. I hope I get to where you guys are. I want to be done already.
Also I just wanted to state that I find it ridiculous that they first send out the information sessions, and after that they send the admission letter when it is already late June. That sounds horrible!!!!
To think that I might get an invitation letter to an information session, and after that I have to wait so long for them to finally tell me if I got in or not! AAAAHHHHHH!!!!
That is just about the worse thing ever. They said they start sending out letters on May 16th to tell you if you got accepted or not! I guess that means that they send out first letters to the students who are really not going to get in.
I am so confused. And it is true, when you call to get some information no one knows anything, and no one can help at all.
Last year they said they would start sending letters out "Mid May". They kept saying that "the letters" will be out "soon" all the way into June.
Then, they said the orientation will be before the end of July. That didn't happen until Mid August. One week before classes started.
All I can say is that you need to be patient. This year there is some new leadership in the school of nursing.
Good Luck.

when I was in nursing school there were people who got straight A's in pre-reqs and were getting C's just like the rest of us.
so having a 4.0 GPA does not mean anything in nursing school.
nursing school has different types of tests.
there were people in my first nursing class with bachelor's degrees who failed.
It might not mean anything. But it stands out for a lot. Plus people who have a 4.0 and start getting C's well... that might be some, but not all. Plus to get into MDC all you need is a high GPA. How easy is that? Gpa does mean something.
Nursing school might be difficult, but it is not impossible. If it was that impossible no one would be a nurse don't you think? If a person who went through high school, and pre reques and nursing with C's there is no reason that an average person can not be a nurse. GPA does not mean anything to you, but it depends on the motivation of the person. Didn't you get in with a 3.3 GPA to BCC and now you are a nurse?
There you go. Average people can be nurses. If not nurses would become doctors.
And did you not have a baby when you were in nursing?
I feel like you are disqualifying my GPA, and almost putting nursing school as to difficult... when that is not the case.
Either way we will just see if my GPA means something or not. Your comment was very discouraging, I did not appreciate it at all. Could you not have come up with something a little more different? You made it seem impossible. It's people like you that I swear make my day, and just make me want to study more than I already do. Because in the long run what matters is motivation, and you are a perfect example of that. You are not the brightest or smartest, you did not get the best GPA, you had a lot of run ins like having a baby, but you made it because you were motivated.
It's like if I had told you in the past that because you had a baby and five rejection letters you were not going to make it because nursing school is to hard, and the test are different!!!! COME ON!
Anyway no thanks for your comment. I worked hard for my GPA and it does mean a lot. It means I am in college with two children and I am motivated and just as capable as you are ok? I am just as capable of going into nursing and becoming a wonderful nurse, and I don't care if there are people in BCC that did not pass nursing after having straight A's and a bachelors. Perhaps they did not want it as much as they said they did. Because believe me when someone want's something really bad they go for it, and do not stop until they have it.
You don't like MDC because you got five rejection letters, and you obviously don't like students with high GPA's because you did not have a high enough GPA to make it in. So you put discouraging comments like that one to make yourself feel better. You are a nurse? WOW. That scares me.
I can just imagine it......you have cancer I don't think you will survive because a lot of other people who were even healthier than you do not make it. It is very hard to survive this cancer!!!!!!!!!!
Well all will come in it's time I suppose. Patience is a virtue that I must learn to obtain.
If it proved impossible to get in then I would apply again in January to push up the GPA perhaps a bit more. All I have left are very easy classes (thankfully).
I am also working on my AA you know just in case. The future is a bit uncertain at times. I want to have plan B in place.
Thanks for your advise. I look to your advise for some light. Thank's for not posting some other horrible comment like some people on this sight. I thought nurses were supposed to be encouraging, and helping, but I am amused to find that is not the case always!
Anyway keep me informed. Tell me how are you doing in your nursing classes? My father went many years ago to the same program here in MDC! He did the accelerated, but I am doing the generic program now.
I told him the other day it was funny that I was going to do the same thing as him, and at the same school in the same campus. LOL. Strange.
Anyway tell me all the information you have. I always look forward to reading any new little thing that might pop up.

ALSO if you had seen the comment correctly what I mean in stating the GPA was that with a high GPA, a person who really wants to be a nurse should have NO problem.
High GPA's are an indication of a lot of motivation, and to become something in this life all you need is perhaps a bit of luck, but above all motivation. MOTIVATIONNNNNNN!!!! READ AGAIN!

Do you think perhaps this semester things will run as they should? I am kind of expecting the same as last year. A lot of wait, and perhaps..... some more wait!
Actually during these days I have almost forgotten the whole ordeal. By the time the letter comes I will be more at ease, and ready for either option.

when you start you will see. i don't have to read anything again. gpa means nothing

motivation and actually wanting to be a nurse is a key to making it in nursing school.
3.3 GPA is average to me, and I knew people who got in to the MDC program with 2.8...... I don't know how.
I had lots of obstacles in my way, and would never demean anyone for any reason at all.
you got it all wrong there.
MDC told me 5 times that I was 'eligible' and after the 5th letter they told me that I should look into their other programs.
but I was already in the RN program at bcc which ended up being good for me.
I made it, I had a healthy baby, I passed boards the first time with min. amount of questions.
"smart" people don't just become doctor's you know, there are tons of careers that require brains and lots of schooling, not just an associate's degree like us RN's.
having a 2.0 GPA does not mean that you will fail out of nursing school, and having a 4.0 does not mean that you will make it in nursing school.
I know an assistant at my job that failed out of the baptist scholar's program who had a 4.0 in pre-reqs.
I was making a point that you obviously did not understand.
Working hard, dedication and the time you spend in the books will determine your success in nursing school.
I on the other hand, knew two people who started bcc before me and failed the first semester, they told me it was so hard and difficult, told me horrible stories about the school. but me, unlike you, appreciated the stories and made me think "that's not gonna happen to me. I won't make those mistakes"...... and I was successfull in the program, and I made it.
I didn't go off on them and say to them "augh you are so discouraging".
in fact, they helped me realized that the program would take tons of work.
and yes, I dislike MDC for rejecting me, me who wanted to be a RN so bad, while they give scholarships to people who don't appreciate it and quit or fail during the first semester.

Hi There,
I too just finished the 2nd semester going into my 3rd next week at MDC. It has been such a rollercoaster, so if you think that you are going crazy now just be sure to keep in mind that it gets even worse. Of course, I mean that is the best way possible. I have not loved every minute, but for the most part it has been, and continues to be, am amazing journey.
I hope nothing but the best for you!!! Keep your fingers crossed!
By the way I am in the Jackson Scholars program, so if and when you do get in, feel free to ask about that option.
