May Nclex takers...come and join hands...

Published

apparently, ive been waiting for other people to start a support group for may nclex takers.....but no....so here i am.....

im taking my nclex on the 7th of may...hopefully, i pass this time. im tired of living a non-RN life......

I am doing the Saunders book and cd on study mode....I also have the book exam cram w/c I plan to study after saunders...its a great review, very specific.....I also bought the book prioritization, delegation and assignment by lacharity....

Im doing some of my kaplan and one question has me totally confused...

I missed it and im not sure if it is just a mistake on the CD or ???

Will someone please explain...

Your pt is a 38 year old male with flaccid bladder following spinal cord injury... RN teaching @ dietary changes is done and you the RN can tell teaching was effective if pt chooses the following beverage...

A,) lemonaid

B.) Prune Juice

C.) Milk

D.) Orange juice

I figured lemonaid or OJ but ??? I guessed lemonaid......

the answer is PRUNE JUICE with the rationall-- correct it promotes acidic urine minimizing risk of UTI and stone formation cranberry juice, tomato juice or bouillon would also be approrpriate...

Besides my choice (Lemonaid) it says INCORRECT.. this promotes an alkaline urine and pt should also avoid citrus juice, (same by OJ)

by Milk it said excesss milk would promote alkaline urine....

Im just confused, i thought fruit juices high in vit c promoted acidic urine.... prune juice i always assumed was stool related...

Any idea's or thoughts on this anyone??

i know it's late..but i had my two cents for this one. when we talk about the GU most probably the bladder (though the answer choices are not really related to flaccid) and the client is at most risk of infection (spinal cord injury) in the answer choices..PRUNE juice is the only fruit drink that prevents infection due to its bactericidal effect. well not really bactericidal (for it does not destroy the bacteria) but it inhibits bacterial growth. like cranberry juice, tomato juice and bouillon. in cranberry juice it is excreted as hippuric acid which helps acidify urine (decrease pH) and therefore, inhibits bacterial growth. it is the same with the prune juice which helps acidify the urine (and the more acidic the more it is least risk for infection--like sperms it dies when there's too much acid--well off topic!). anyway, in all nclex reviewers i had (kaplan, saunders, mosby and hurst..yeah a lot ) and also in my past review class..for the client teaching, you always make sure that what they drink won't be of any harm to the client. like milk (which is most contraindicated to GI patients and for taking meds--for some reason like GI upset, constipation, or masking any S/S with regards to tonsils) for orange juice, a good source for glucose for diabetic clients but a NO-NO to client with renal disease (yes due to potassium) and tomato juice taken with meds (vitamin C) which helps for effective medication absorption. lemonade are not usually catchy for choices. though it's a citrus drink..tomato/orange juice are the good sources for vitamin C in nclex hospital.

correct me for any misterm/misinformation.

my two cents..:twocents:hope it helps you.:typing:wink2::)

MaleNursesRock, You are so right in your post. I think everyone expects you to pass the first time not knowing thats what we expect also.:uhoh3: And like you said everyone will pass "IN THEIR OWN TIME" and not when everyone else wants us to. It's just very discouraging when your supporters are not so supportive for the long hall. But I have found and noticed a great group of supporters here and I really appreciate all the encouragement and inspiration that comes from this website. I too will not be sharing with anyone at work when I'm going to retest only with the individuals here. I need good vibes:bow:

Yes, in hindsight, i think thats the best-just keep your test date as "down low" as possible. I told everyone the first time, teachers, co-workers, my kids day care providers, even the mail man !! and when i failed, i had to tell them , at staggared intervals, because i saw them at different times and places. , which, in turn made me feel worse re-telling of my failure and having them look at me with those "eyes"--we (who have failed) "know" that "look"..the second time, i told about half of them , cause of course, everyone kept asking "when are you going to test again" ??!! they even bugged my wife (who works the same hospital--on the unit next to mine) so she told ALL them. and then i failed again ! got the same "look"--this time, no one that (we-wife and i) know when im testing--sure they keep asking, all we say now, is "oh, probably very soon"--

i test in a week and a half. right now, after 6+ months of studying and doing questions--i hit my "wall"----where you know when you are reading content, and 5 minutes later, you are like "what did i just read" ??--or when you are doing questions and you just want to get through them to see the rationales ?? just "clicking" that button on the computer or ccirlcing them in the saunders book ??-just to get to the end. ?

unknowing to me my wife had a copy of the kaplan q trainer-i took quizes 1-3 and improved on each one, i plan to finish q4-7 next week, finish my fryes bullet book, and re-read the kaplan strategies for the nclex...i was going to buy the kaplan qbank, but at this point--i dont think i can finish the 1100+ questions in a week and half

im burnt out.

i agree. my friend told me that if i do not pass next time he would be disappointed at me. how am i supposed to feel about him after what he said? he never studied for nursing and has no idea how things are.

sometimes i feel sorry that i told so many people about nclex. i am so tied of people asking me every time about when i am going to take a test? from now on i just will tell everyone that this subject is prohibited for discussion. i am sure i will feel much better without that kind of pressure. i will just complain here, on thin forum, because i know, you will understand what i am talking about.

What I did was do each chapter in Saunders then when finished with the entire subject of lets say peds then go do the CD and do all the child health questions in study format.

Then when you do the body systems you learn the pharmacology with them then go do the CD questions on that subject. Study mode only. So you are teaching yourself the pharmacology in context with the system you are learning. :)

That is the method that was recommended to me by my NCLEX teacher. And complete the entire orange book. My NCEX teacher and Suzanne's first tip are pretty similar LOL

I think I understand what you are saying. I'm just a little confused. I studying with the Saunders and I would like to try your system. If you can explain it again for me that would really help and be very appreciated.:yeah::bow:

I was just wondering....my NCLEX is May 14th, and hopefully it will be the one and only time I take it. What are some of the ways you all are studying for the test? it seems so perplexing right now.

Well..count me in for the 14th also..i guess will be in this together:lol2:..
