Maricopa Skills Center's Question's

Published

I want to take the LPN route first as I just see it fitting my life at this point. I just want to know a little bit more about these centers I keep hearing about.

Do you have to have any pre req's for them?

How long is the LPN program?

If you went there, Do you have any advice?

cost of LPN program?

Is financial aid offered?

Hours of class?

Do they offer the LPN program at different center's or just one & if so which one?

Times of year the program is offered?

Any feedback from you all would be great as we all know getting info. from future, present or alumni students is SO much more helpful;)

sassiebaz, do you still have papers from the info session? its not said so on application packet.

at the session I went, they said it's getting really hard to find hospitals which let us do clinicals due to increase of nursing programs in the valley, we might have to go anywhere like Avondale, Chandler or so. even on weekends.

I thought about going to Gateway LPN, too, but its a 3-semester-long program including pre-reqs and there is a waiting list (1-2semesters wait). and after completion, you might have to wait 1 semester to get into block 3. so, possibly there will be 2-3 semester wait and 5 semester study to finish RN. I've talked to the director of nursing program at Gateway, so this info shouldn't be too far from the fact.

if I had lots of pre-reqs left for RN program, I would go Gateway and take pre-req and co-req classes while i wait because its cheaper. but I only have 4 classes to go and I can finish them by the end of this year. I really don't want waiting period. that's the same reason I chose not to go straight for RN.

oh, and one more thing, Gateway LPN program takes "regular" public people along with sponsored students.

anyway, give them a call and ask about the early morning and weekend possibilities for March students. good luck:up:

Clinicals alsways start 630am, you meet before you go to the floor (Pre Conference) and then you have Post Conference. Trust me you well need these times to finish all your work you will have due before clinicals.. BTW, Enjoy..

It's interesting, Im in the March program and have not been told about the 6:30 am thing or that Sat/Sun are possiblities. Im a little irritated actually! I need to call them. Im strongly considering withdrawling anyways and just doing my LPN at Gateway. It's half the cost and I can get an agency to sponsor me....UGH why does this always seem to happen? Once I commit myself to something, things always seem to go off course! Maybe jut forget the LPN altogether and go straight for RN?

If the first 14 weeks are classes only then are there still classes while your in clinicals too. Im confused, is it first half only classes and second half only clinicals or is the second half both?

The first 14 weeks are striclty classroom work, learning how to do assessments, medications and such, then you well only go Mon-Wed, and have your clinical.

Just wanted to know if anyone here is planning on attending the Aug 08 class & how your experience has been with them so far?

I was accepted & I really hope I can find some financial aid ASAP, but I could just scream the administration there is HORRIBLE!!

Yes admin is very had to deal with, but just be firm! If you are not getting your questions answered, ask for the supervisor, that is how I got my questions answered.

Are you starting in the Aug program? The tuition I believe is $7500??, they do have a payment plan and financial aid. Did you fill out a FASFA?

My experience with the skills center has been a complete runaround the hoops you had to jump through before you were even put on the list were hidious, and then to get in the august class and the "new" person in charge of the program tells you well you need to have total proof of funding in 10 days or you lose the spot is a blow no other college make you prove all in advance , and they have payment plans online etc.. also if your funded by your job you better make sure that the letter your employer sends the "skills center " is to their understanding because i was told my letter didnt prove intent and it told in detail that they were paying in full and the amount , i am disapointed i guess in the runaround there is a shortage of nurses and instead of being helpful they seem to just be making it harder for people. :banghead:

Hi again!

I thought I would offer some insight to the program starting in Aug. I did find the "guy" in charge of the PN (ie questions, letter etc) completely useless. He could offer no help and does not follow through on any tasks.

I did speak with Mary, she was great and very helpful.

Class starts (Block A) Aug 8th at 8am and will be Mon-Fri 8am/3pm with every other friday off till November 14th, 2008. Every other Friday off beginning August 15th.

Then Block B begins December 12th, 2008, I do not have the details of that schedule.

From what I was told this a good PN(LPN) program, it is through Maricopa Community College.

I am excited and best wishes to all future nurses out there!

hi again , omg i thought the [program info session i went to had classes m-f 8-1:30 for the first 14 weeks

That was what I was told too!

Then I called on July 11th and spoke to Mary, who faxed me a sheet with the dates of the blocks and times of Block A. It is not called Block 0,1,2 anymore, now it is Block A,B,C. I called the nursing department and spoke to the secretary who verified the information.

If you have any questions call Admissions and ask for Mary, or call the nursing department and ask for the secretary. :)
