Maricopa Skills Center's Question's

Published

I want to take the LPN route first as I just see it fitting my life at this point. I just want to know a little bit more about these centers I keep hearing about.

Do you have to have any pre req's for them?

How long is the LPN program?

If you went there, Do you have any advice?

cost of LPN program?

Is financial aid offered?

Hours of class?

Do they offer the LPN program at different center's or just one & if so which one?

Times of year the program is offered?

Any feedback from you all would be great as we all know getting info. from future, present or alumni students is SO much more helpful;)

If you totally dont qualify for any aid you can pay monthly payments, of somewhere between $450-$550 a month, depends on what you put down for down payment. If you do qualify for aid they pay you monthly depending on your hours in class, since it is NOT atradition semester school it is an hourly/clocking school. Since I started in August I still haven't recieved any of my loan money or grant money and they told me not to expect to till this first block is almost done!!!

Yes, I mean the overage, I am recieving loans and grants to cover tuition. I have $6500 in overages and haven't seen a dime yet! Really irritated by the whole situation there!

Yeah, I could always tell the Fin.aid department wasn't all that together! Hang in there...it'll come. How is the program itself though?

One of our 2 teachers is dumb as h-ll!! She just gives us the book and says know it all for the test. The other teach is the best I've ever had, puts things into senarios you can understand. Overall, first block is a breeze, hope it stays that way?!!

as someone said earlier, your schedule is m-fr 8- 3 for the first 14 weeks?

or has it been changed?

yes, thats what it is....although its only occassional Fridays, not every week. We went 3 Fridays in Sept, but only 1 Friday in Oct....

I am in block A, we have only one Friday in October, then part of November, then block be starts 12/01/08.

The intructors are great, I think it depends on your attitude that you have when coming into this, remember this is nursing school and it is a Maricopa Community College, not just a random center. The instructors give you power points and helpful tips throughout lecture. The first 4 weeks will take getting used to, but now everyone seems to enjoy being in class and eager to learn more. I am married with kids, and time management is required! I am enjoying it so far, except for my drive from the east valley.

As far as financial aid, all the community colleges are being affected by the same issue, the maricopa community colleges switched to a different system, and now loans and grants have to be entered manually for every student. I was told to be patient, and check back with financial aid every week or so till the problem is resloved. ASU is now using the same system, and when they went live with it, it took 3 months to verify and disperse loans and grants to their students.

Hope this help! :D

I know this program is part of the Maricopa communtiy college schools, however I do believe they are on an older cirriculum. I verified this with two other nursing programs. It was my opinion that this program is somewhat easier than say the Southwest skill center or Gateway. No offense or anything. I was just told it was an "older" program. What that means exactly, I don't know. I have a friend who went there and she said it was fairly easy, whereas I have spoken to other students and people have actually failed out of other programs. I don't know what's what, but this is what I have gathered by the many people I have spoken to over the last two years....Now as far as the financial aid...Im glad you mentioned this as I wasn't sure why things were so out of whack. It makes sense now, but Im so NOT happy with the way all of the CC's have changed...it's hard to even register for classes or do anything online...UGH!

I guess the program is different for everyone! We have virtual clinical assigments online that simulate real patients, meds, hospital chart etc.

Patient rooms with different types of dummy patients, stethescopes, thermometer, blood pressure cuff (electrical and manual). All of our books are current 2008 editions, so as of the current block I believe all the curriculumn is current! :) Hope this helps with any discouragment! :)

The last class that graduated all but one passed their NCLEX! I was told that they did have different instructors last year, but now they have 3 instructors (Block 0) that have been helpful, a new instructor that some students were hard on in the beginning, but now have some to appreciate!

I am sure any LPN school in the MCC district will be helpful!

Thanks! :D

Well, maybe that explains why there have been so many changes in the last year. That is a positive thing! I have not yet decided, but I was originally enrolled to start the Aug. program there at MSC but was unable to for several reasons. Im not against anything, but I was hoping for Gateway as it would be more affordable for me. Im still year out anyhoo....

Thanks for the updates, it's always nice to hear from someone currently in the program!

i just called them today. they told me that they are gonna have a board meeting next week, selecting students for January start.

they are gonna send out letters or phone calls to those who selected next week or no later than following week.

keeping my fingers crossed

That is great! I feel that you will apprectiate the program, the instructors right now, especially M.B is fabulous! I do feel I am on my way to being a confident LPN, then to Block 3 towards my RN!

If you don't get in for January, ask if you can show up the first day to see if there are any "no-shows"!!! I know when I went the first day, we had two that didn't show up!

Remember to read your text and powerpoints(can't stress that enough), do the study guides given, and stay for the who wants to be a millionaire games. (They provide you with helpful test questions!)

Hope to see you January!
