I need help for an assignment please! What do female school nurses do when they need to examine a male student for something delicate such as testicular pain? Also, if you had a Muslim student, how would a physical assessment be handled? Thank you for any experiences or input you can provide.

Get a witness to observe the exam. The Muslim issue is totally dependent on the individual client.

What do you think we should do? Tell us yours and we'll tell you ours.

School nurses don't examine genitalia unless they suspect they need to intervene until EMS arrives; life threatening, that is. Otherwise parents are called to take the child to the appropriate facility, based on the signs/symptoms, to be examined by a doctor.

Unless a traumatic injury that requires emergent assessment while waiting for EMS arrival, there would be no reason for a school nurse to perform a genital exam on a student. Chronic or non emergent would be referred to personal physician or a specialist such as a urologist. A parent would be notified. If testicular torsion was suspected EMS would be called.

I agree with OldDude and JustBeachyNurse . . . there is NO reason for a school nurse to be checking male's genitalia. Unless there is an emergency and then you'd have a witness with you. And call 911 and/or parents.

ABSOLUTELY!!! There is no reason to examine genitalia unless there is a severe accident and emergent situation. And even then, always with another adult as a witness.

I don't drop pants on anybody....unless emergency and then it has to be life or death. Secondly, research cultural differences and how nursing would apply.

Good luck.

I know your instructor told you "peer-reviewed", but I do not think they meant AllNurses.

It is for a discussion and I am having difficulty finding info so I was looking for a voice of experience. My instinct would be that my actions would be dependent on the degree of severity and if it was deemed life threatening. I would call the parent first. For the Muslim male I would be sensitive to the belief that men are not to be alone with a woman, nor have physical contact. If it was an emergent situation I would assess as necessary using the utmost respect and provide explanation. I agree that a witness should be present. Am I on the right track?

Thank you OldDude and JustBeachyNurse! I appreciate the guidance and clarification.

Yes!!! And my esteemed, experienced school nurse colleagues have answered you correctly!

I had a 17 year old male student come in with a yeast infection in his groin. He has a 1:1 (female) and he is on meds. I called his mom and she brought up anti fungal powder and he applied it himself in my bathroom. I did not look at all.

Know that most males will not come to the school nurse with anything "down there" unless they are really uncomfortable. But yea, I would call the parent first. Always.

If they were literally on fire and I absolutely had to look I would make sure that someone else was there. That has not come up for me, yet, so I'm glad for the replies as well.
