I need help for an assignment please! What do female school nurses do when they need to examine a male student for something delicate such as testicular pain? Also, if you had a Muslim student, how would a physical assessment be handled? Thank you for any experiences or input you can provide.
Unless a traumatic injury that requires emergent assessment while waiting for EMS arrival, there would be no reason for a school nurse to perform a genital exam on a student. Chronic or non emergent would be referred to personal physician or a specialist such as a urologist. A parent would be notified. If testicular torsion was suspected EMS would be called.
School nurses don't examine genitalia unless they suspect they need to intervene until EMS arrives; life threatening, that is. Otherwise parents are called to take the child to the appropriate facility, based on the signs/symptoms, to be examined by a doctor.
ABSOLUTELY!!! There is no reason to examine genitalia unless there is a severe accident and emergent situation. And even then, always with another adult as a witness.

I know your instructor told you "peer-reviewed", but I do not think they meant AllNurses.
It is for a discussion and I am having difficulty finding info so I was looking for a voice of experience. My instinct would be that my actions would be dependent on the degree of severity and if it was deemed life threatening. I would call the parent first. For the Muslim male I would be sensitive to the belief that men are not to be alone with a woman, nor have physical contact. If it was an emergent situation I would assess as necessary using the utmost respect and provide explanation. I agree that a witness should be present. Am I on the right track?

Yes!!! And my esteemed, experienced school nurse colleagues have answered you correctly!
I had a 17 year old male student come in with a yeast infection in his groin. He has a 1:1 (female) and he is on meds. I called his mom and she brought up anti fungal powder and he applied it himself in my bathroom. I did not look at all.
Know that most males will not come to the school nurse with anything "down there" unless they are really uncomfortable. But yea, I would call the parent first. Always.
If they were literally on fire and I absolutely had to look I would make sure that someone else was there. That has not come up for me, yet, so I'm glad for the replies as well.
