Make Up Your Mind Please!!!

The "my mom told me to come to you if I didn't feel good and you will call her to pick me up" thing annoys me to no end. Of course the first thing the kid is going to do ask to go see the nurse. If there is nothing excludable, I send them back to class (if they're frequent fliers). If they're insistent, I'll call the parent and tell them that I believe the child is okay, sometimes the parent will have them stay, other times they come anyway. I have a FF that came to see me late in the afternoon one day, no fever, just some nasal congestion. The next day mom kept her home stating, "she said she went to the nurse yesterday and that she had a fever and nobody called me".. I explained to mom that no, she didn't have a fever, just some nasal congestion. Mom was like, "well, she felt warm last night to I kept her home". The next day she sent LD to school, before the morning bell even rang, she was in my office saying, "my mom said to call if I still don't feel good".. No fever, sent her to class, called mom who agreed to keep her in class. LD came back at lunch, smiling, still no fever, but said the same, 'mom said to call if I don't feel good'. Sent back to class, called mom who agreed to keep her in school. Guess who didn't come to school the next day? I guarantee you mom couldn't get her out the door, because she learned the 'nurse will send you home' wasn't going to happen.

That drove me bonkers, I had ones waiting in the hall when I'd get there in the morning that came straight to the health room from the car because "Mom said to come see you if I didn't feel good." Ofttimes the teacher didn't even know where they were and Mom never answered the phone. Just something to say to get them to get out of the car.

For this I have a rule, until the first bell, I'm not seeing anyone 10 mins before or after each class. Unless it's a true emergency.

Sometimes I will call a parent and just say "__________told me you wanted a phone call." Then, I say nothing else. Awkward as heck for them, funny for me.

My personal pet peeve is "My mom's in the parking lot, she said I need to come sign out through you first and you'd call her."

I had a student come right to me, pointed at her friend and said, "She has a fever, chills and she doesn't feel well." and this before the breakfast bell and before the main bell, which in a rule, I don't accept students until 10 mins after the first bell of the day, which is the main bell. So I told her, "Well, I need a pass, I need a pass and I need a pass." and just walked away.

First of all, I need to hear it from your friend, not you. 2nd of all, you are in 8th grade, if you didn't tell your mom, because you are old enough to tell your mother you are not feeling well, then you are fine. and 3rd of all, check your attitude because I am NOT your servant and how about some politeness next time?

Yep. My go to phrase is, "Well, you already arranged your pick up so she can go sign you out through the front office, that's not through me."

And when this happens and I call a parent I also say "this will count as an absence you know".
