Macomb Community Graduates 2012-13

U.S.A. Michigan

So, I said I would start this one after orientation so we could all have one thread to talk about things under instead of 10. What did everyone think of orientation? Any un-answered questions? And what start date is everyone requesting? Yay for the new uniforms/prices!

Sorry - if you go to Macomb's website and then search online bookstore. Then go to textbooks and the search engine should come up there.

Below is one more attempt at the link -

Macomb Center Campus Bookstore: Buy Macomb Community College College Apparel, Textbooks & Gifts: efollett.com

I hope this helps!

It works, but just takes me to the basic page. I know how to search for the books, I just don't know what the class numbers and sections are since I haven't gotten that paperwork since I'm not starting till later!

You can find the course numbers in either the schedule of classes, or on the program description for the nursing program. The section doesn't matter, just pic one. Everyone uses they same books etc.

All you have to do is select NURS and then the next drop down menu has all of the course numbers. Maybe you are searching a different way?

My head is spinning with the list of books the online bookstore says we need. I usually buy my books online because they are soooo much cheaper, but I'm not sure which ones we will absolutely need and which books we can only purchase at the bookstore. Has anyone actually bought any books yet??

I don't know which books they are telling you to buy this year but I can tell you the ones I almost NEVER used last year...

-APA format book (I used it ONCE..and you can get all the info online anyway..so I would say don't buy it.).

-Mosby's Medical Dictionary (i think it said it was required last year, I never bought it and it was never mentioned).

-Scopes and Standards of practice (its important to have this book for your career I guess, but I have never opened it..so you could definitely wait and buy it later).

-There was a book about development through the lifespan that was required for us last year and I never used it. Not once.

-I only used the Communication in nursing book once or twice (there are chapters assigned but they aren't really important for testing and are actually really common sense, so you can use your judgement on that)....Actually if anyone wants to buy it off me I will give you a good deal! Same for the Journey Across the Lifespan book.

-BUY Carpenito FOR SURE. YOU WILL USE IT A LOT!

-Taylor with the videos is important too.

-The Health Assessment book with the videos is pretty important too.

-The Davis Drug Guide/Lab manual/Taber's package is important, but just a head's up: If you plan to use a PDA instead, don't bother buying these or else you will spend the 90 bucks or whatever twice. I had no idea we could just use the PDA versions so I bought the books.

What else are they telling you to buy? The curriculum might be a bit different but I am assuming its the same teachers for most classes.

A4L4S or Coranzo - I am starting this August. I am thinking of adding an 8 week PHED class on. Do you think I can handle the 1st semester of nursing school and PHED at the same time or should I wait and take it in the summer?

Thanks!

What class are you thinking of taking shawnb? I was also thinking about taking PHED2020 online but thought maybe the second 8 weeks would be better than the first.

I say go for it. You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders so you should be fine. I took the one online...something about lifestyle risk and and it was so easy I was embarrassed to take it. A lot of busy work, but brainless busy work.

You have to remember that you are only going to have school for Nursing 2-3 days a week. That means you have 4-5 days completely off to do whatever you want. I don't know why people freak out about the schedule so much. When I got my first undergrad degree it was4-5 classes per semester, including labs, 5 days a week for 4 years. I would have LOVED this workload.

I have taken a few other classes while in the program. No problems yet other that working with the schedule! That is why the online ones are great.

If you are worried though, put it off a while until you get the flow of the program. There's not rush to get it done now.

I know they changed the courses so this may have changed but I would say that the first 8 weeks are a breeze, and the second 8 weeks pick up a lot more becuase you start learning medical things. I would go with the first 8 weeks.

Our first rotation basically involved a whole bunch of reading, a couple quick assignments, and one 2 page paper. But like I said, I know they changed things. And if you are like me and don't do the reading, then you have lots of free time!

Corazon or A4L4S - I saw that Corazon recommended not buying everything that they recommend as far as books go. Are there are that were important for the class, but you haven't really looked at now that you're done with it? I'm all about keeping the cost down, and I've done so in my pre-req classes using Chegg.com to rent the books MUCH cheaper than buying them. I'm not starting till March, and we all know the cirriculum has changed slightly, but again, anything you never looked at after the 8 weeks were over?

Orna, I am considering taking the PHED 2010 the 1st 8wks. I went on ratemyprofessors.com and typed in the instructor's names. One sounded like the best teacher option. The one that teaches the 2020 class didn't rate very well. Let me know what u choose. Maybe we will take the same class.
