Macomb Community Graduates 2012-13

U.S.A. Michigan

So, I said I would start this one after orientation so we could all have one thread to talk about things under instead of 10. What did everyone think of orientation? Any un-answered questions? And what start date is everyone requesting? Yay for the new uniforms/prices!

Jamie, I mentioned earlier that the 8 gig is all you need. Zhockeymom found it at Wal-Mart for $178, and Apple has them for $199 with free engraving. I downloaded Epocrates and it barely takes up any room on it, so there will be plenty of room for whatever bundle you decide to purchase (skyscape, unbound, etc.).... those come complete with the medical dictionarys, drug guides, etc, and run around $150 for a years subscription, but you're getting 5-6 programs/books that would cost every bit of $50 each, so it's definitely a deal.

I purchased the 8GB Ipod Touch. Walmart has it online (only) for $171 and it will be shipped to a store - however, I was too impatient to wait for it to be shipped to the store. I ended up buying it at Best Buy and paid $179. I ordered it online and then drove to the store and picked it up (great service).

I also downloaded the Epocrates and the Skyscape free offers. Once I start the program, I will invest in the subscription.

I love my Blackberry but I really love the Touch - it is much easier on my eyes!

So they sent out registration dates and times... I got July 13th (starts the 12th) at 10:30pm... Are they implementing this since everyone would register at midnight and crash the site? Either way, i have my whole schedule picked out (BSN pre-reqs) so I'm hoping they're still available then! Anyone else planning on taking Chem, Asian Religions, Philosophy or the HHSC class (the on on Wednesday afternoons)?

Does anyone know where exactly we're suppose to go for this CPR class at Henry Ford Hospital on 19 mile? I've only been there once years ago and I'm afraid I'll get myself lost!

Where the hospital is, or the classroom? The hospital is on 19 mile right next to MCC.... I had never been there before, but mapquested it, and found it without a problem...

Yea I know where the hospital is..I just wanted to know where the classroom is.

The paper they sent me had to wrong classroom on it, and the instructor had to take us to another room, so you may want to call them the day before and double check. Ours said to go in the west entrance, when really the main entrance would have been better once our classroom had switched. Apparently they move them around, so I'd give them a call!!

I wanted to start a supply list of recommendations.

I know some of you have already purchased your stethoscopes. I'm curious as to what you purchased and where you purchased it from. I'm leaning towards the Littmann Class II SE. Also, second hand watches, all white athletic shoes, penlights and iPod touches. I know most of you were talking about New Balances for shoes, and know that Walmart has the cheapest price for the iPod touch. I saw that Target had some decent looking second hand watches. I also saw some really nice Nike's.

Please leave some recommendations! :)

O.K. don't laugh, but I bought a fake white leather minnie mouse nurse watch. Minnie is wearing a white nursing outfit and the second hand has a heart on the tip. I paid about $14.00 at kohls. I figure that we will probably go thru a lot of them so I went cheap.

I bought the littmann cardiology III from allheart.

My brother gave me his old iphone 3g. I am going to use that for the software that we need. Is anyone else going to use an iphone. I am just going to take the SIM card out. My brother told me that I should still be able to make free calls on it using skype? As you can tell, i'm not up on all the latest technology!

Make sure your watch is water resistant. You will be washing your hands and probably lower arms a lot!

Good point, thanks.

Forensic - I bought my steth from Redding Medical - Littmann Stethoscopes, they seemed to have some of the best prices, and I got my order 2 days later. Color was as described/pictured and the engraving looks great. I bought the Master Classic II SE... It is pretty much middle of the road (like they said in orientation), and I have cousins from U of M that are nurses that swear by that model. According to them, we don't need anything more powerful than that, because unless you're specializing, you're just doing basic assessment, and more powerful picks up other sounds that aren't always relevant to basic assessment.

I love my iPod touch, and I'm just waiting for more people to recommend different programs. As of right now I only have epocrates (free download)... it seems very easy to use. There were a few fossil watches I was looking at that are water resistant and have silicon straps without any holes in them (other than the ones to buckle the watch), so it would be really easy to clean/sterilize when needed, and they aren't bad looking, and are around $75 with warranty. If they're waterproof, you shouldnt go through them. All you'll hopefully need is one.

I heard Welch Allyn is good for a penlight... they seem somewhat costly, but I figured it has a warranty, and it's an investment into your career as a nurse, not something you would need for just school. They have them on Amazon for $45-50, I believe.
