So, I said I would start this one after orientation so we could all have one thread to talk about things under instead of 10. What did everyone think of orientation? Any un-answered questions? And what start date is everyone requesting? Yay for the new uniforms/prices!
Forensic - I bought my steth from Redding Medical - Littmann Stethoscopes, they seemed to have some of the best prices, and I got my order 2 days later. Color was as described/pictured and the engraving looks great. I bought the Master Classic II SE... It is pretty much middle of the road (like they said in orientation), and I have cousins from U of M that are nurses that swear by that model. According to them, we don't need anything more powerful than that, because unless you're specializing, you're just doing basic assessment, and more powerful picks up other sounds that aren't always relevant to basic assessment.
I love my iPod touch, and I'm just waiting for more people to recommend different programs. As of right now I only have epocrates (free download)... it seems very easy to use. There were a few fossil watches I was looking at that are water resistant and have silicon straps without any holes in them (other than the ones to buckle the watch), so it would be really easy to clean/sterilize when needed, and they aren't bad looking, and are around $75 with warranty. If they're waterproof, you shouldnt go through them. All you'll hopefully need is one.
I heard Welch Allyn is good for a penlight... they seem somewhat costly, but I figured it has a warranty, and it's an investment into your career as a nurse, not something you would need for just school. They have them on Amazon for $45-50, I believe.

I am not sure if you guys are buying Nurse Pacs for the new curriculum but our Nurse Pacs last year had penlights in them. And honestly in the first year I didn't use my penlight more than a couple of times. But if you have that kind of money laying around then by all means spend it :)
Since you've already completed your first year of Nursing, I was curious as to what brand of shoes did you buy? New Balance? Any recommendations for supplies and where to purchase? Thanks! :)

Do not spend that much on a penlight!!!!!
$3-4 is plenty. I can't tell you how many I have gone through! Granted I work at a hospital too, but they constantly fall out of packets and into some pretty nasty stuff...and I like being able to toss it in the trash without feeling guilty rather than scrubbing someone else's vomit/pee/blood/etc off of it. Plus, like pens they will disappear in a second if you lend it out.
Check out allheart.com for supplies. I have used them several times and they have good prices. Or, for convenience, Life Uniform or any other scrub store around.

I have New Balance shoes (all white from DSW).
My stethoscope is Littman Master Classic II (I got it online somewhere..I can't remember where).
Cheap penlight from the nurse pack
cheap bandage scissors from the MCC bookstore.
I have an Iphone but I never bought any apps for it (I used free versions of Epocrates and Skyscape, but mainly just used my hard copy of Davis Drug Guide during clinicals..I found it to be more work to use my Iphone for meds..but some people like to..totally your call).
I also got a cheap watch from Target because I didn't want to have a nice one ruined when it ended up covered it bodily fluids.
Its really all about cheap disposable stuff!
The online bookstore is up and running with all of the fall requirements - the amount/number of books needed for the first 8 weeks is crazy (and I say this in a good way because I am a book nerd!).
There are plenty of recommended books for the 2nd 8 weeks to give a jump start to those that are interested!
I can honestly say I am so jealous of all of you that are starting this fall - I am grateful that I was accepted, just wish I could start sooner :)!
