Macomb Community Graduates 2012-13

Published

So, I said I would start this one after orientation so we could all have one thread to talk about things under instead of 10. What did everyone think of orientation? Any un-answered questions? And what start date is everyone requesting? Yay for the new uniforms/prices!

I am so excited - I wish we could start now.

The uniform prices are awesome! I didn't get up close but they looked kind of stiff - did anyone try them on?

I thought the orientation was very informative. I also think that it was a great idea to bring in a panel of students. The only thing I was surprised on was the fact that you need titers for everything, even if you have proof of immunization.

Does anyone know how many students were there? It seemed as if they had quite a few packets left and I think that was how they got their counts.

Also - The Saunder's NCLEX Review is available on Walmart.com for $39.50, whereas Barnes & Noble and Border's sells it for around $57!

As for a start date - I will take the earliest spot available!

Hello everyone. That was really intense yesterday. I thought the main speaker was very blunt to the point of being rude. She made me feel like anyone that asked a question was ignorant! I also got the impression that they were trying to scare people into quitting. Oh well, better days are coming. We can do nursing school, we made it this far.

I am planning on an August start and I look forward to getting a good study group together. I also bought the NCLEX from Walmart.

I thought she was rude as well. Some questions were repetitive (and some just plain stupid, sorry. Like, she had just got done saying the shoes had to be ALL WHITE, and some guy raised his hand and said "So, they have to be all white?" YESS! THATS WHAT SHE JUST SAID!) and some didn't need to be asked in front of everyone, and could have waited till after, so I guess I can see why she was frustrated, but she kind of started out with that tone.

I asked for an August start date, even though I ranked close to last. Doesn't hurt to ask! I have every pre-req done (except for the one they sprung on us, which I think is a waste - we're already in the program, we don't really need an intro) so I'm hoping that will maybe get me an october or january start. I don't really care, as long as it's not march! I don't want to wait that long!

zhockey - I tried on the uniforms - they run a bit big. I'm 5'6, like 135, and the XS fit, it was just a little tight in the sholders (i have broader sholders), so I'm going to go with a small. And the pants also looked like I would be a small, although I'm going to look for a different scrub company for those - I dont like how the school's ones are tapered at the bottom.

Here's the Saunder's NCLEX on Amazon - it's 41.50 with free shipping

Don't let them scare you. They try that crap every year. Several of us in my group work full time and are just fine, clean clothes every day, a social life....you get the picture

The woman said to figure out what you will need/want, and to please email her (so she will have the right amount of things in stock) - since we can't post email addresses on here, you can call the bookstore and ask for it, or just go to the bookstore website and write a general email. I want to say that they will be available for purchase in a month? I think that's what she said when I was trying them on yesterday.

Hi Everyone! :)

I too was a little overwhelmed upon leaving the orientation yesterday. Prior to walking inside the auditorium, I was extremely anxious, excited, and eager to learn more about what the next two years of my life would entail. Unfortunately, I walked away feeling a little like I had already been defeated. I thought the orientation could have had more of a positive/optimistic feel, but needless to say...I've worked this hard to get to this point...I won't let a few pessimistic comments derail my plans. I did feel that they conveyed as much information as they could in such a limited amount of time, especially with having to deal with some of unnecessary questions/interruptions.

I do wish they would have put together a more informative packet pertaining to all of the medical requirements that we need to meet prior to starting. It would have been nice if they would have given us a couple different locations (and pricing options) that would be able to handle all of the titers, vaccinations, tests, etc. I spent about 30-40 minutes this morning calling around to my family physician's office, Macomb County medical clinic, and a few other places to try and find prices on each of these. The TB test runs $8 and the HepB vaccination runs $35 for each series at the Macomb County medical clinic. However, they don't handle titers or physicals. I called a few different places and $140 was the cheapest I could find all three titer tests for. Does anyone know of anywhere else in Macomb County that would be cheaper?

Also, the Red Cross has a BLS for professionals class that runs $75 for 8 hours. Does anyone else recommend another place to obtain the BLS certification? Mine expired last year so I have to retake the class.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks! :)

I just had my immunizations this week at the Macomb County Health Dept. - They were out of the regular Hep B and had to use the high risk dosage and the cost for the immunization was only $8!

I booked my BLS today through the American Heart Association and it is held on a Saturday for 5 hours and the cost is $55.

Could you please share where you found the $140 titers at? Was that price for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (all separate), Hep B and Varicella? Every place I have called is much higher. Also, did you get a price on the drug panel? The cheapest I found was at Mt. Clemens Prompt Care for $31.

Jamie312,

I felt exactly like you did!! I was soooo excited before walking in....felt a little overwhelmed and defeated when I left. I thought too it could have been a little more positive. I understand that nursing is not for everyone but the ones who are in it for the right reasons will excel!!! I need and want great study partners....We need to band together. Where are all the august starts?

Zhockey- where did you find the info about the BLS? I tried googling a few things, and found websites here and there, but nothing mentioned locations of the classes.

Since I want an August start, but probably will end up with anything but that, I'm going to get all the info together but wait to start on it until that letter. Most things had to be done within 6 months of starting, and if I'm starting in January or March, this is too early to start. I wish they could get the letters out sooner so everyone could properly plan! So, are we expecting them by June 21st? I know that a student pointed out to her that thats what the letter said, but she acted like that was wrong - I didn't hear the final outcome. Any one else know?
