Macomb Community Graduates 2012-13

U.S.A. Michigan

So, I said I would start this one after orientation so we could all have one thread to talk about things under instead of 10. What did everyone think of orientation? Any un-answered questions? And what start date is everyone requesting? Yay for the new uniforms/prices!

I think the final answer was that it is June 21st for the letters to go out, registration is July 14th.

Here is the link that I used - http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3012360

I will be at Henry Ford Macomb (19 Mile Rd.) on Saturday, June 12 from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm. The contact for this location is Nancy - A1 Health & Safety (586) 726-2587.

Hope this helps!

I find this funny that after so much time competing against one another to get a spot in the program, we can now band together and help each other out! What a relief to have a support system (even if it is only virtual at this point!)!

Ok, thank you! I'm going to check my calendar and see if I can maybe do it that Saturday as well.

Anyone going to try to get a job in a hospital? I called the nursing recruiter today at St. John's (Main) and she said that they don't have anything special for students, and that we have to apply online just like everyone else, and just wait for a position to become available. SOO, there goes that.

Anyone taking any classes for their BLS this summer? I'm getting geography (thankfully I can take this instead of a foreign language!) and history out of the way... not too excited about it though!

I had an opportunity come up today for a position in a hospital but I chose to pass on going for it. I think I would like to have a solid year in the program under my belt before I take something on. I am really nervous about the work load and I have it pretty easy - my kids are grown and I don't work.

Question - does anyone feel like an addict with all of this nursing stuff? It's all I can think about! I have been shopping; bought my rolling bookbag (yes, I am a nerd), white sweaters and 3/4 sleeve shirts, supplies, supplies, supplies. I have ordered my Saunder's NCLEX and another book that I found on a thread - Mosby's Tour Guide to Nursing School. It's a good thing that the uniforms aren't available yet or I would probably be wearing them around the house! I am obsessed and I think I need help! lol

I work at St. John Main right now as an inpatient phlebotomist. I think I'm going to wait until after the first semester to apply for a job as a Nurse Tech, I think they require you to have taken the Fundamentals of Nursing class before they will hire you as a nurse tech anyway. I just want to see how schedules for school will work out before I switch jobs, I'm actually starting to get a little nervous about all this new stuff going on. It's exciting at the same time.

I wrote to the woman dealing with the uniforms, and told her what I needed (2 tops, 4 patches, 1 lab coat, and told her I was getting pants elsewhere) and she said that the order would be in at the end of July and that I could just pay for it when I pick it up. SO, you all may want to send her your order? I assume they're going to order mass quantities anyways, but she was stressing to us yesterday that she wanted us to email her with sizes.

Lisa, I'm excited too...when I'm bored I find myself shopping around for watches, shoes, etc. I've got the stethoscope covered, so I haven't been looking at that too much. I like this one Fossil watch they have at Nordstrom, because its a plain silicone strap (sports style) without all the grooves/bumps in it, which I figured would be easier to disinfect at the end of the day.

I just had my immunizations this week at the Macomb County Health Dept. - They were out of the regular Hep B and had to use the high risk dosage and the cost for the immunization was only $8!

I booked my BLS today through the American Heart Association and it is held on a Saturday for 5 hours and the cost is $55.

Could you please share where you found the $140 titers at? Was that price for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (all separate), Hep B and Varicella? Every place I have called is much higher. Also, did you get a price on the drug panel? The cheapest I found was at Mt. Clemens Prompt Care for $31.

There is a place on Dequindre and 16 mile rd in Sterling Heights called DOTS, and they do a drug test for about $20. Here's the phone number: 586) 795-3687

Thats where I went last year.

Jamie312,

I felt exactly like you did!! I was soooo excited before walking in....felt a little overwhelmed and defeated when I left. I thought too it could have been a little more positive. I understand that nursing is not for everyone but the ones who are in it for the right reasons will excel!!! I need and want great study partners....We need to band together. Where are all the august starts?

I felt the same way but you are right, we made it this far and we will survive anything they throw at us!

I also need a few good study partners & I should be an August start.

Don't let them scare you. They did that to us last year. "You can't work or you'll fail" "you won't have time to do laundry or see your family"...etc...I worked full time for a while, go out with my friends on weekends, and go on vacations..and still got A's in all my nursing classes (except fundamentals 2-fluid and electrolytes got me!). Make good friends (I am still super close with everyone I met in my first nursing class-basic skills lab!)..they will be very important to keep your sanity.

Corazon- any info on titers?

This may be a silly question but what class should we be taking when you go to the AHA website? I'm guessing it would be BLS for healthcare providers, but I don't want to accidently register for the wrong course!

That's the right one MizzGizz!

Corazon- any info on titers?

You know, I don't really have any good advice on that. I went to my primary physician and I ended up paying out of pocket for the vaccines that I needed because my insurance wouldn't cover them. I heard that one of the health departments, maybe in Port Huron or something does titers pretty cheap. Maybe do a search on here, I can't remember.
