So, I said I would start this one after orientation so we could all have one thread to talk about things under instead of 10. What did everyone think of orientation? Any un-answered questions? And what start date is everyone requesting? Yay for the new uniforms/prices!

I will be taking classes that will go towards my bachelors through Oakland University. I have completed everything I need from Macomb (other than the NURS courses).
My schedule will be on T/TH -

Intro to Logic
Intro to Chemistry
If you are interested, I will let you know more details.

Hi Everyone! I'll also be starting in August! :) I've already placed my order for the scrubs - does anyone know how long they take to arrive? Also, has anyone purchased any of the required reading materials yet? I was told by the bookstore employees that they don't expect to receive the current text books until next month. Has anyone found any good deals online? I'm always hesitant to order books online ahead of time. I want to make sure that I'm purchasing the most current edition. Also, does anyone know if all of the reading assignments on the syllabus should be completed prior to the start of the Aug HHSC 1040 class?
I was also planning on investing in an IPod Touch for the drug guide. Can anyone recommend a good drug program to purchase for it? I currently have a Blackberry and I know they said that there are apps that are compatible, but I'd rather not carry my phone around with me to use for that purpose.
By the way...I too was expecting to receive more information pertaining to the medical requirements in the packet that we received last week. I called the school and was told that they like to wait a week or two before sending those out, because they always seem to have a few people call that need to change their start date for one reason or another.
Any info would be much appreciated! Looking forward to meeting some of you in August!
Jamie312- I'm not starting till March, but I ordered my scrubs anyway after orientation, and she said she expected to have them in by the end of July at the latest. I didn't care for the pants much, so I ordered the tops and plan on going to a scrub store in Ferndale to try to match them up with some that have a little more of a shape to them.
As far as books, I don't know if you are the type of person who wants to keep all their books when they're done or not, but I HIGHLY recommend Chegg.com for renting books, if you're into that. I've used them for the last year, and I've saved so much. For instance, the 2 classes I'm taking right now, the books totaled up to over $300, and I paid $96, with free return shipping. All you have to do is put in the ISBN #, and it will show you the most recent edition. I figured that not every single book that they're going to require us to have is going to be THAT important, so for those that aren't going to really help me down the road, I planned on renting.
I just got the new iPod touch and love it, but no one has responded as far as the applications go... so I'm curious about that as well!
Thanks for the info LauJen! :) I actually like the pant style, but I was surprised by the fit. Based on the size charts online, I should have been an XS all around. I'm glad that I went to the bookstore to try them on, because I ended up having to order a S in the pants. So I would definitely recommended that everyone go try them on prior to placing their order, because I'm not sure what their return/exchange policy is.
So are there different types of IPod touches? Which one would you recommend? I'll basically just be using it for school, drug guides, and any other medical app that will apply towards the curriculum. Also, do you know if there is an additional monthly service that we'll have to carry in order to use the app? Is the drug guide a web-based app? I've never worked in a hospital, but I was under the impression that even if the hospital offers Wi-fi, that the signal probably wouldn't be strong enough on certain floors/units.
I'll keep that website in mind, but I think for now I plan on purchasing all of the required nursing text books so that I will have the option to refer back to them throughout the program if needed.
I just got the third generation iPod touch (comes free with a new macbook), which is the one that just came out. From my understanding, it's pretty much the same as the second generation as far as what we'll be using them for, so if you can find a second gen. one cheap, I'd say go for it.
If you don't plan on buying a new macbook, the 8 gig iPod touches go for $199 (there are higher gig/memory storage ones, but they go for 3 and 4 hundred, and we wont be needing that much storage), and they have free engraving (which is nice since it seems like a lot of people are starting to use these, and it can be identified if lost). They do work anywhere that has a wifi system without a problem, but if you ended up in a hospital where the signal is weak or non-existent, you can pay for something Apple offers called "mobile me", and from my understanding it's not that expensive and it gives you connection to the internet. Apples internal airports on their products that pick up the wifi signal are great, and will pick up even the faintest signal, so I would try to use it within the hospital before ordering the mobile me program.
As far as the Apps go, I know that there are some you can use with or without wifi, and some that try to connect to it for latest info and will not work without it. I have no recommendations for the Apps right now though, since I haven't been able to get another nurse/nursing student to tell me which ones they use/recommend.... may be worth opening a new thread about it though.
Thanks for all the info! I'll stop at the Apple store within the next few weeks to check them out. My clinical assignment will be at HFHMC...which I believe is Henry Ford Macomb?? It might be worth it for me to put a call into the hospitals general info line to find out about their Wi-fi.
If you hear anything about the drug programs, please post. My sister-in-law is a Nurse Practitioner and she said that she uses Epocrates, but I wanted to get a few more opinions before I went out and purchased anything.
I just found this - it says that the Touch uses WiFi for updates with Epocrates.
Free medical PDA software: Epocrates Rx for iPhone and iPod touch
I am on my way to Walmart - they have them for $178.
Which iPod did you end up purchasing if you don't mind me asking? I looked online and I saw that they ranged from around $200 up to $400+. Since I'll probably only be using it for school/clinical, I'm not really interested in spending $400. Does anyone know if the cheapest model would have enough memory to hold the drug guide apps and maybe a few songs?
