lpn wanting to earn my rn

Published

I'm new to this site. I have been an lpn for 9 years and want to persue my rn. I have been looking into it for months now. It's very overwhelming just trying to find a school. Can someone tell me what is the first step to take to earning my RN. I have to work my full time job, is distance learning doable or not? I r/o TCN. Does anyone have any info. about ISU distance learning lpn-bsn? I have a copy of my transcripts, should I try to finish up what prereqs I need online somewhere to see if I can do it. Or should I just go at night toa tech. college? PLease HELP?? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm trying to look for the same thing but it is hard. I want to do it online because I have to work full time. I did finish all my pre requisite and ready to do it but so far no luck at all. Where do you live if you don;t mind me asking. Online is not hard I took some classes online and it is pretty reasonable. let me know if this help you.

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to allnurses.com. First, know that TCN is a private, for profit organization that offers no degrees or credentials.

As far as good schools to look into, I have a few suggestions. First, check out the Excelsior College program. This is, in my opinion, the finest nursing school on the planent. Not so much because they are great educators, have a great program, etc, but because only those who can prove their clinical skills and knowledge under the most stressfull circumstances in a three day window are priviledged to call themselves Excelsior alumni. EC nursing grads are truly the Spartans of nursing. Essentially, what takes most RN grads to prove in 3-4 years must be proven by an Excelsior Graduate in a weekend. There are no margins for error. Also, as an alum, I'm a bit biased.

If you choose Excelsior, make sure that your state board of nursing will accept their degree's. There are many abused children and those with sub-room temperature IQ's and those who grew up eating paint chips who are now in postions of power within many state boards of nursing. Consequently, it is more important to these misguided individuals in HOW someone obtains training rather than IF someone is qualified through documented compentency through sanctioned and awarded NLN accredited schools of nursing.

Another great school for LVN-RN is Indiana State University. I graduated from there with my RN-BSN and teach the community health nursing course (N450). An outstanding program on every level. I would encourage you to consider this program over EC if you need a good deal more direction--that is you need proding. EC is more for self-starters and those who do not need others to motivate them to learn. ISU does a bit more on the spoon feeding end.

Lastly, University of Southern Indiana has a great program to consider. I know very little about the undergraduate program, but I'm graduating there in May w/ my MSN and all faculty have really been great.

Hope this helps and good luck.

LOL! I just got a visual of myself chucking a spear and yelling, "SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" :D

I agree ... EC is awesome. I love it when I'm working with the other EC grad at our ER (she graduated in 2001), and she and I get assigned "the ballroom," where we put all the sickest patients; it's one large room with stretchers separated by curtains. I'm always like, "EC grads, rockin' the ballroom!" :D

Hi, thanks for the comments. I live in KY. So you did good with the online studies? Everyone tells me it takes a lot of self-discipline, but if I set my hrs aside and knew I had to do it and was paying the money I hope I'll do fine. where do you live?

I live in California and I did the RNtoBSN in about 14 monts. I'd say there is more self discipline w/ EC than ISU. There are many distance ed students at ISU from Kentucky. I'm starting to notice that more and more students are LVNtoRN than RNtoBSN, so you will be in good company.

If you are interested in ISU, give Kim a call at the nursing department at 888.293.4842. She is a wealth of information and will lay out the particulars for you. Tell her that her friend from Folsom Prison said Hi.

Good luck

Thank you very much for all of your helpful info. I think I will do the ISU program, I've heard lots of good replys about them. Thanks again.

I'm in Delaware. What is TCN? (I know I will embarrass myself). I'm most concerned about the cost and the CPNE. Where do you take the CPNE, what's it like, etc. Thanks again.

Hi, I'm in Delaware but I'm from San Mateo, California. Some day I might go back to care for elderly parents, so I was wondering if California accepts RN grads from ISU? I know they are not accepting EC grads at this point. Thanks.
