This thread is for those who is about to start LPN program. It will be great if we keep each other posted on our excited journey, share the experience and maybe answer questions that others will have about the program.
So, i guess i start. On July 11 i will be starting 11 months long program at one of the local technical schools. My mandatory orientation is on June 10 where, according to letter that I received, we will be given our first homework (a month before the actual course starts!!!). I am 31 y.o married and have a 3 y.o son. I work as a CNA and I will continue working p.t during the program. I am very nervous because I haven't take any science classes since high school. English is my second language but that will not be a problem. I chose the LPN path because I love to work at the patience bedside, i can earn decent money and gain more hands on experience. I am planing to further my education after becoming LPN.
I am wishing everyone who is about to start or just started good luck! Lets do it together
They gave us couple Of pages with common abbreviations and terminology which we are going to be quizzed on. Besides that is always good to know vital signs.( what is normal blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration should be. You will need to memorize the differen numbers for infants, adults and geriatrics). You will need to buy a watch with a second hand.
It is highly suggested to buy an organizer/planner. Does anybody have a suggestion on good planner?
In my school we have to have a laptop and we have to bring it to class every day.
Also you will need to buy a pair of white (comfy) shoes. Any suggestions on those?
For those who is going to full time school i think that it is a good idea to order at least 3 pairs of school scrubs. I ordered 2 just because I didn't have enough money with me that day, but I will get 3 more pairs because I know that there will no time for washing my scrubs after each time i wear them. Your appearance is part of your over all evaluation. So it is very important to have your scrubs clean and pressed.
You will have to buy a good stethoscope.
i will be starting 2 weeks from now and there's still so much to do. I feel anxious....can't wait to start this journey
In reference to you planner question this is the one I own... That's the new one I just ordered. I had the current one I have used the last year has been a lifesaver
Oh that's cool. I kind of hope my program does that for fundamentals so I can pick up extra shifts during that time. I currently work as a Monitor tech/ unit secretary but I also have my CNA (been certified for 10 yrs), so I really don't want to have to repeat all that but if I have to I wont complain of course, because I am happy to be accepted into the program
I wish you all luck!! I did two semesters and withdrew last semester due to personal reasons. My advice is after you do all the backround stuff required grab that foundations book and skim through it.. read the basics like when, why, how to bath, turn etc... medication rights and checks. The proccess of what a nurse does, here are the main things: ASSESSMENTS (pretty much use your five senses "not taste :p") how to come up with a priority DIAGNOSIS(airway, breathing, and circulation, skin, and nutrition ect..are the importants); desired GOALS (pt skin will stay intact....); INTERVENTIONS (turn pt every two hours) EVALUATION(pt has no skin breakage). Sorry I really enjoy this and cannot wait return plus I just wanna give guidelines to help out as much as possible. :)
