LPN's who are going on for their RN ...

Nursing Students LPN-RN

For all of you LPN's who are furthering your education by going on to get your RN, what is the main reason you are choosing to do so?

Is it JUST the money?

(debating about going on for my RN myself)

Specializes in LTC, Psych, Hospice.

I am! I'm doing an LPN/BSN bridge program. I've taken 2 classes/semester for the past 3 semesters. I have 2 classes left, then I'm going from full-time @ work to PRN so I can take my last 3 semesters full-time. It's a personal fullfillment thing for me. It was also my husband's dying wish....that I graduate college. I graduated LPN school from a CC w/ an associates degree. Kids are all grown and gone and now it's ME TIME. Yea, the money will be nice, too!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I received my RN license last year. I was an LPN/LVN for 4 years at the time that I earned my RN license, and yes, more money was one of the motivating factors to further my education. The role of the LPN is similar to that of the RN, so I might as well be paid more money if I am going to bust my butt and remain in nursing to do almost the same job.

Specializes in school nursing, home health, geriactrics, Tele,ICU.

Me myself im doing it for personal reasons because i want to further educate myself, also because i want more job oppurtunities and hopefully be able to work closer to home because right know i am an hour away from home. i am working on my last pre req now and hopefully i can get into a program soon!!!

Specializes in Med-Surg, Ortho, Subacute, Homecare, LTC.

Where are you doing your LPN/BSN bridge program, if you don't mind me asking?

I have several reasons for going back. I've always wanted to work in NICU..can't do that as an LPN. Also, the pay difference is another appealing reason..as is there are more job opportunities for an RN than there is for an LPN.

I hear that too, that there are MORE job opportunities for RN's. But then I also read on here that there are plenty of new grad RN's looking for jobs.

Specializes in Sub-acute, Rehab.

I plan to go on for my RN, but I also have lofty goals that have nothing to do with money. I like the education and there will be more jobs available. You are correct though everyone is having a hard time finding a job. I currently just got my first job as a LPN and hopefully I can do my schooling through them and get my experience and we'll see where I head from there. But the main reason isn't money. Good Luck to everyone!

I said more job opportunities not that I meant more job openings :) When I say opportunities I meant more options..more areas to work (different specialties and different areas like hospital, private duty, office etc where here in CT LPN's are most utilized in the LTC settings). while its true that the job market is pretty dismal for most new grads, taking a look at the want ads, there are more positions available to rn's than lpns.

Southeastern Louisiana University

Specializes in Pulmonology Clinic.

I am working on my last pre-reqs for RN. It is not about the money for me either. I just want to expand my knowledge and skills. Hopefully I can stay at the clinic where I work now, which does not pay much (lpn or rn) but its a great place to work. My goal when I started college was to get my rn, and lpn first was the best way for me to go.

Specializes in Wound Care, LTC, Sub-Acute, Vents.

i became an rn last october 2010 and my number 1 motivation was the money. lpn and rn job descriptions are almost the same at my facility so why not get paid more for the same work. at the moment, i have no motivation to get my bsn because i won't get paid extra. i know i have to eventually but i am procrastinating (s/p?). hopefully i will get motivated enought to start this year. good luck to you. it's worth the money to get your rn.
