For all of you LPN's who are furthering your education by going on to get your RN, what is the main reason you are choosing to do so?
Is it JUST the money?
(debating about going on for my RN myself)

There are more job listings for RN than there are for LPN/LVN.

I plan to bridge. It has nothing to do with money and everything to do with the type of work I enjoy. Staying an LPN is not going to get me jobs in critical care, which is what I prefer and where I want to stay -- so I have to bridge (:

I am a recent LVN graduate and I plan on getting my RN, MSN. Why? I went back to school after 21 years of realizing that being an RN was for me. Money, benefits and job security were all a bonus to following a dream. I went thru many obstacles to get to where I am at and I wouldn't change being a nurse for anything. The reward I get from helping, healing or holding a hand is greater than anything else. That is my motivation to following my dreams. Good luck to you!!! My suggestion is to follow your heart. Good grades, $$ or a school is not what makes a good, successful nurse. Only you determine that. =0)

I am an LPN, & have been working on my RN degree part time the last several years. I'm currently not working as an LPN (stay at home mom for now). I need 2 more classes to be an RN. I have to work a year as an LPN though, before the community college I'm going to will admit me to the last 2 nursing classes I need. At that college, their policy is you must work one year before being admitted to RN school if you've been out of the nursing program 3 years (which I have been). I have young children, so RN school is on hold. I can't wait to go back though. I want to be an RN to help our family financially & be treated with a little more respect. I think being an LPN is great, but have definitely been talked down to from many elder RN's!

I have a couple reasons why I am going back to get my RN. I have been an LPN for 4 years and have loved both of my jobs. It will help out our family if I make more money so that is a reason but not the determining factor. My goal is to work in the NICU and I want to go on to get my Neonatal Nurse practitioner and work in the NICU. So, I am going at this the long way I have done my LPN, next I will do an ADN program then the BSN then the Masters for my NNP as long as they don't make the DNP the standard by the time I get to that. So my biggest reason for going back to school are my educational goals.

I am Certified as a Nurses Aide, Medical Assistant, Phelbotomy, and EKG Tech. Will any of my coursework and work experience transfer to shave some time off of my pursuit for a LVN license? Or will I have to sit in classes for a year and repeat lots of information I already know.

While you already know plenty of information, there is an old saying: you don't know what you don't know. CNAs, MAs, phlebotomists, and EKG techs have not learned about the nursing process, care planning, pharmacology, the pathophysiology behind different disease processes, assessment, ethics, legal issues, leadership, and many other topics. Nursing is not about the completion of tasks and skills. It is about knowing the rationale and science behind the skills.
Please don't misundertand. I don't want to skip pertinent classes or clinicals. I just want to know if any of the coursework I have already taken will count toward an LVN program and save me some time in finishing the program.

Working in LTC charge nurse, but everytime State comes through they ask who is the RN in Charge, they have no idea of my role at this facility, so I decided to return to school, have been taking pre-reqs parttime for the past 5 yrs, will be applying to a bridge prog this Spring 2012 at NHCC. The RN's I work with are wonderful.:cheers:

I AM AN LPN OF 3 YEARS GOING BACK FOR MY RN DEGREE THIS FALL. WHILE MONEY IS ALSO A MOTIVATION, MY MAIN REASON IS BECAUSE LIKE EVERYONE IS SAYING, LPNS ARE MOSTLY LIMITED TO NURSING HOMES WHICH IS WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING SINCE BECOMING AN LPN. ALTHOUGH ALL FACILITIES ARE DIFFERENT, I FEEL AS THOUGH I'VE LEARNED JUST ABOUT AS MUCH AS I'M GOING TO LEARN IN LTC. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE MY JOB, PATIENTS, AND COWORKERS. NOT TO MENTION I MAKE A GENEROUS SALARY:yeah:. I JUST DESPERATELY WANT TO EXPERIENCE NEW THINGS LIKE THE ICU, ER, MED SURG, AND WHATEVER ELSE THAT IS OUT THERE FOR ME TO LEARN.:).

Hey I don't think having your CNA will knock any course work out unfortunately, BUT it WILL certainly help you get through LPN school! You will feel steps ahead of others in the program when it comes to bathing, bed-making, transferring, mobility, feeding, and whatever other skills you may have obtained. I remember being in my LPN program during the first semester and learning from the CNA's when we had our clinicals in the nursing home. They were a huge help! Good luck to you!
