LPN New Grad Pay Rates in Kansas City area?

Hello. I know it's not polite to talk about pay but I am thinking of going into a very expensive LPN Program that begins in October and I need to know if it will be remotely worth the expense. The PN Program is through Colorado Technical and will cost over 20,000 dollars...so I need to know I can at least afford to live and pay for child care after paying my student loans.

Thank you in advance for getting back with me.

Hi dconnors!

Wow that's expensive! I'm going to Penn Valley's LPN eve/wknd program. Have you looked into going to school there? It's a lot cheaper and they do have a great reputation. I have been told pay is anywhere from $15-20 per hour. Many hospitals vary and not all hospitals utilize LPN's. A lot use patient care techs instead. Basically for me it is a lateral move for the time being so I understand your concern, especially at those rates. I almost went to Nat'l Am Un for RN and they were $$$$. I just couldn't see myself incurring a debt that high at my age of 36. PV costs about $7500. I'll bridge for RN shortly after but I'm excited to be an LPN too. We get a lot of clinical experience at PV. I know there may be a slight wait at PV but all good things are worth the wait :wink2: . Remember to consider accreditation. If you start at an expensive school who is not NLN accredited your nursing credits will not "usually" transfer to a NLN school and you'll have to finish anything you start at the expensive school.

Whatever you decide, nursing is an awesome career. So much opportunity for growth and the ability to help others.

Good Luck!

Kara

No offense but how about $70,000 for 3 years at Loma Linda University in California? Thats how much was several years ago... Those chapel units where very expensive, you know. I'm talking about a BSN program. Ten years and I'm still paying for it... If you are planing to pay so much, why not an RN program?

Dconnors, I am going to Concord and its roughly 23,000 with IV certification included, not sure if other schools include that or not but its off broadway and its a very very felxable school I currently work full time adn have several bills to pay so I needed a prgrm for only a few days a week they have several others there the RN prgrm is around 30k and its 8-5 mon through fri for 16 months the LPN I attend is tues- thurs and satuday from 4-10 and then 8-5 on saturday, there are other time optionms to choose from this is just one example of how it worked well with my schedule. Before you take those big steps you may want to look into Concord- I recommend talking with a woman named Chris Davis, she's excellent and she walks you through the whole process. I highly suggest at least taking the time to look at the courses.

I just tested into a LPN program at Northland Center, it is 11,000 for the LPN and is about 10 month program. After that I am planning on going to Park for there RN bridge program. It is also 10 months and it is 18,000.

As a LPN you are going to have a hard time finding a job to offset that much cost, unless you do LTC.:nurse:

New RN's in KC make $20/hr so I doubt new LPN's get more than $15-17. Best wishes!

I just finished my bridge program for RN and am astonished that the start pay is around 20 dollars. I worked as an LPN for five years in the KC area and the pay was between 15-18dollars an hour. Hope this helps! Good luck!:nurse:

hello i am planning to attend this school if i get accepted ( Nothland Career Center) Did you get accepted and graduate? How was it? can you explain a typical day there. Thanks -beth

Hi! Went to CTU. My first job was LTC at 18.50 hr. 11-7 shift and that place was BAD!! Had 2 nights w/ good nurses and 3rd night was CHARGE NURSE!! Never did aide work and was scared to death. Gave notice there are was only there 3 weeks, and got another LTC for 17.50 closer to home, w/ night diff. Was kinda disappointed and had hoped it would be closer to 20, but for LPN's that is pretty much it. AND forget a hospital job in KC...they don't do LPN's..or rarely and especially without experience. I WANT to get my RN asap.

CTU was pretty good, but had some issues and we kinda paid for it in our clinicals. The end ones were much better, but they don't have a settled nursing chair yet..fyi. The acting one is great. It's a good place, but it's expensive.

Check out some other community colleges, penn valley or on the Kansas side, KCKCC (that's where I went; it was no more than $5000 for tuition, fees, and books). Pay is greatly varied, I think as a new graduate I have been pretty lucky; I started in corrections making $19 something day shift, plus prn through the agency I worked as a CNA doing ped. homehealth but that was only about 16/hr. With about 5 months of experience after realizing I didn't want to work in a prison, I got a job at a really nice lct facility in the skilled unit part-time transitioning in to full evening and night shift making 20/hr no diff, but some benefits. I also work prn at an assisted living for 21/hr no benefits (which I started with about one year experience) So there is a potential to make more. The one issue with trade school is that if you do eventually want to go for your RN you have to go back to take your general ed (a&p, human development and/or psych) though they may be part of the program they won't transfer.

The only problem is i dont want to go to a 2 year college just to get my prereqs out of the way. These trade schools such as Concord and CTU (colorado techinical university) dont require you to have prereqs before applying. (plus im thinking they are a tad bit easier to get accepted into) yes def more money but may be worth it to someone like me that needs a steping program and fast.

Ive looked into penn valley and its just tooooooooooooo long of a wait. Ive also heared of girls with 4.0 all throughout high school and college not getting accepted into penn valley. :( talk about discouraging.

Sooo Heather...Lets say i did end up going to CTU; and i would graduate as a LPN. If i went into like Park University ( just a example) to bridge over to my RN, they may not accept my human development and a&p courses??? Is it common that that happens?? Thanks for warning me about that.

I am def going to check into that when i go to the school to talk to the admissions advisor!! but dont wory i wont take their word for it. I'll go talk to the schools that i would eventually bridge over to get my RN and see what THEY SAY what they take and do not take.

i appreciate your comment and bringing it to my attention.
