Day In The Life of an LPN/pay

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hello all,

Im hoping to start my LPN courses in the fall. I wanted to work in a doctors office, either peds or ob but from reading it sounds they don't get paid much? Where do you work as an LPN? What does your day consist of? What is your pay?

I work in a doctors office it's Mon-Fri holidays off. I get 17.00/hr. Weekends are voluntary and we get time and a half. I bring patients back, get vitals, assist with any exams, do phone triage. I just interviewed for a peds position. I love working in a office setting. You get paid more at LTC, but I love my hours.

17 is way more than most LTCs pay in my area!

I work in a pediatric home health agency. I get paid $16/hr. I work 4 10 hour night shifts. What I do when I get to work is administer meds, wound care (trach and gtube), administer feed through gtube, give breathing tx, suction, and keep pt safe during seizures. I have one of the harder cases the agency has. But I'm glad because I still get bored at times when the baby is asleep and I have nothing to do and no coworkers. I'm in Southern California btw.

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

In Indiana, a lot of clinic LPNs make around $14 - $17. A new grad is most likely to stat at the low end.

Specializes in Clinical Documentation Specialist, LTC.

Working in LTC as a MDS Nurse I made $20 per hour. When I worked in a wound care clinic from Nov. 2012-February 2013, I made $17 per hour. I will be starting a new job in a family healthcare clinic next week starting at $17 per hour. The benefits more than make up for the pay cut. I've been a LPN for 18 years. Had to get away from doing MDS for my sanity.

Specializes in Long Term Care, Medical Surgical, ER.

I feel your pain I was an MDS Coordinator for two years!!

LPNs do get paid well if they have experience and depending on what State or the "population" of the area they are working in. I work in a rural hospital in Southeast Missouri and make about 18+/hr.

When I started out I made 11.25/hr. So it just depends...

I work for an agency. I work with a special needs boy who has a seizure precaution, needs to be fed, and has a g-tube. I park at his house ride the transit bus with him to school, take care of him while at school, then ride the bus home with him then I leave. I get paid $30/hr

I work in a correctional facility. $18.50/hr. (I'm also a new graduate and this is my first LPN job) Night consists of pill pass and paperwork. I start at 6pm, insulin coverage to inmates at 6:30pm, pill pass starts right after, pill pass usually over at 10pm. Do my paperwork, that usually takes a couple hours tops. Then I'm chilling for the rest of the night unless a code is called. Go home at 6am.

However, I start a new job, ($19/hr) again with corrections, Monday so as far as my job duties I expect there to be more. Lol Which is understandable, I was very spoiled at my last job.

I work in a surgical clinic mainly with Urology but we also have cardiac, podiatry and general surgeons. Mainly I bring patients in and get them "roomed" for the provider. (Get vitals, ask why they are there, go over meds and allergies). We also set up for, assist and clean up when there is a minor surgical procedure. Far from what most people believe, we do a LOT of work. We don't just sit on our tushes all day. Some days we have 80 patients like 7 different providers (we only have 8 rooms) and we have 9 procedures. It can be pretty hectic. I also do a lot of cath changes, cancer treatments and other nurse visits and then of course documentation.

Third shift pediatric home health. I work with a two year old with a trach and g tube (mic-key) his mom usually gives me report, he is usually in the crib so I get him out to play and give him a sippy cup of water as we are trying to get him to take more in orally. Then I do trach and g tube care, and couch assist and suction and I usually give him his inhaler when I first get there. Then by ten he is back in the crib and gets a feed so I give him his meds and start the feed and hook up the vent. After that it's just the scheduled feeds and water bolous and cleaning up before the en of my shift. I make 14 dollars an hour but it really isn't that hard and this is my first nursing job ?
