Hi. Okay, so I am going to be a second semester junior with a very low gpa. Basically, by the time i graduate my undergraduate gpa will be roughly a 2.6, with a physiology major.
however, i have NOT taken any of the prereq nursing courses (on my undergrad's school Accelerated BSN program it showed 9 classes that I could still take).
I am motivated now. I was very immature and I have a new found focus and i'm running with it. Unfortunately, it's too late to salvage this semester grade wise but from next semester on I will be on my game.
So here is my question.
Are there any accelerated BSN programs that you guys know about that look at only the prerequisite course grades for admission? I KNOW THAT I CAN DO BETTER IN THESE PREREQUISITE COURSES. from this moment forward it's A, A, A.
Or even if not just the prereq's, the last 30 credits??
Ideally, I'd like to do the accelerated BSN right after graduation, as due to my low gpa and everything i'm already going to be extending my undergrad education by one year.
Is all hope lost? :(
P.S: I'm getting my CNA this summer
I'm taking courses at TWU to get into the RN-BSN program. I think there are a few other courses that are considered pre-req's - another Math course, a Womens's Studies, Fine Arts, etc. - but maybe that's for the RN-BSN instead of ABSN. If you go to the TWU Nursing Page they have SO much information that will answer most if not all of your concerns. Also, I've found everyone at TWU to be SO helpful!!! Read everything you can on the website, and then send an e-mail with any questions you still have to the Nursing Program Coordinator. If you send them your transcript they will even tell you what you need to do next - classes, etc.
It may be awhile until I get into the RN-BSN program, since I have a young son & I feel like I need to back off school a little - but I love TWU!!! I screwed up my grades - a long time ago(!) so I feel your pain. Unfortunately it will stay with you, but TWU seems to look at what you're doing now and is supportive.
Good Luck & God Bless!:balloons:

okay so lets say this is my situation:Hi everyone I screwed around in my first two and a half years at college and did very, very poorly in school.
In the last two and a half years, I took/am taking around 58 credit (including nursing prereqs, some at my university and others at a local cc to save money). The last 58 credits were good- with over a 3.5 gpa. I graduated with 132 credits total at my university, plus about 15 or so at my cc. My undergraduate degree was in physiology.
The problem is that the firs two and a half years were soo bad that my overall college gpa is still less than a 3.0, more like a 2.7.
Like i said, the last 58 credits were really, really, really good.
I have no problem with taking the GRE.
Are there ANY accelerated BSN programs AND/OR direct entry MSN programs that you guys know of that look at the last 30 or last 60 credits??
I'd be willing to relocate anywhere in the US. If I could help it i'd like to stay as close to the state of michigan as possible.
thanks so much!
Check out the accelerated nursing program at Minnesota State University Mankato. They do a prerequisite gpa screening not an overall gpa.

And it is in MINNESOTA.....

LSU's CARE program (it's what they call their accelerated program) only mentions prereq/coreq GPA. They look at the whole person and do interviews and all that, so even if they also look at your overall GPA, it's not a strict points system and you'd get a chance to come in and explain. There aren't that many accelerated programs in each state - you should start by going to the websites of all the ones in areas you'd consider living, and check out the admissions standards.

If I can't do an accelerated BSN, how about any direct entry masters programs that look at only the last 30 credits? Or 60? (prefer 30)???

I think if you work as hard as you can on your pre reqs and look for programs that fit your need. I don't know of any specific programs but all the schools are different. I am going for my ADN and my program picks people only on their pre req GPA.
I got into all three Accelerated BSN programs I applied to with straight A's in my prereqs and a low GPA from my undergraduate degree, about 2.7 - but that was a long time so they figured I had time to mature - and it was a very competitive school. You might try something like volunteer EMS in the meanwhile - looks good on your application and you can see if you actually like patient care.

There are certainly programs. I know Kent State University requires a 2.5 overall GPA or higher to be considered so I would assume they would look at your app more indepth and see all the positives and give you a fair chance. So, I'd search out programs that have less than a 3.0 overall required for application... probably your best bet.
My story was very similar. My GPA for my BS was 2.5. My GPA for my master's was 3.2. My prereq GPA was like... 3.8 (which included about a half-dozen classes taken at 2 different community colleges), and I got into the UM Second Career program on my second try (only because I didn't send syllabi for my out-of-state classes the first time). So, yes, you stand a reasonably decent chance at an accelerated second degree program. Speaking from my own experiences, I'd start with UM, MSU, and Eastern Michigan. Wayne State's program is so well known, it's gotten MASSIVELY competetive for admissions, and Oakland's program has some funky prereqs--naturally, if you have them, then go for it. There are a couple others you can check into as well. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

I applied to Wayne State's accelerated program. They look at (about) 10 classes, Biology, A&P, Chemistry, Organic & Biochemistry, Microbiology, Nutrition, and some supporting classes such as humanities, sociology, psych, etc. They will take the highest grade if there is a choice (eg. you got a "D" in one humanities but an "A" in music history, they will take the A). They calculate their own GPA based on these classes, once for the overall requirements, and once for the science classes only. You should have a good chance if your grades are decent in these classes.
They run information sessions often, as does Oakland University. I would just go to one of those sessions if you can and get a feel for it - you may be pleasantly suprised! Or the information may be on their web sites. Good luck!
It really depends on the program. I graduated with a 2.3 gpa with my bachelors 7 yrs ago. On my pre-reqs I got a few A's B's and the dreaded C plus. I got into lots of nursing schools and some I did not. So apply to as many schools as possible, ADN & BSN. I was posing the same question that you are asking to myself two yrs ago. ESpecially when an advisor even told me that I would never get into a school with my grades.
Bottom line is if you really want this you will not give up.
No one can stop you. I didn't and I am now wrapping up my first semester with a 97 average in math and a 92 in lecture.
Good luck. And just keep trying... I must study now I have a killer test tomorow.
