Low gpa and failure in pre reqs. Am I doomed?

Published

Hi everyone, I live in NY, and I want to purse my associates in nursing. My gpa went from 3.9 to 2.6 because I failed math. Even if I retake the failed class and do well in other classes I doubt my gpa will be anything higher than 3.2. I heard private schools will take shameful students like me. Do you know any privates that have a less competitive aas program? Also what can I do about my low gpa.

You can re-take that math class and cast a wide net in looking for schools. If your GPA was impacted that severely by one course- then you need to take more courses. Dilution and all...

Thanks for the reply. I definitely will take more classes to dilute that grade. But I really dont think it will be high. Will I be denied into the program?

Nobody here can tell you whether you will be denied admission or granted admission. You need to talk to the admissions advisors at each of the programs that you are considering. And take into consideration, that even if they advise you one way or the other, you can apply for admission and be surprised.

Be very, very cautious about private, for-profit schools. They will admit just about anyone with a pulse, regardless of whether that person has a realistic chance of actually passing classes and the NCLEX. Imagine borrowing $40,000 - $50,000 per year x 3-4 years only to find out that you have not been adequately prepared to pass your boards.

It depends on what the minimum GPA is for acceptance, and also whether entry is competitive or wait-list?

Just because a program has a low minimum GPA doesn't mean that people with that low GPA get accepted. Those programs still have students who have higher GPAs & the school will want to accept those students.

Not personally no but I'm sure anywhere u go it'll be just as competitive. If you don't get in then I would def retake math. If you want this then you'll do whatever it takes. I know many many great nurses who didn't get into the program the first few times they applied but they didn't give up. Good luck.

They are over priced and you'll go into debit trying to become a nurse. Keep trying community college.

Wow, one class caused your GPA to be down by one whole point??? I am sorry to hear that. Yes, you can certainly retake it. Also, you are not a shameful student, things happen sometimes, and just because we may fall, we can always choose to get back up. Finally, if possible, try to apply to as many public schools as possible! Private schools, though easier to get into, are not guarantees of quality education and future job prospects.

Each college and nursing school is free to handle the issue of repeat grades however they wish. Some will use only the higher of the two grades, some will average the two grades. In any case, take the class again and use all the resources that your school offers (math center, tutoring center, supplemental instruction, etc). Get a high grade and then see how the schools that you are interested in handle this situation.
