Losing my Mind ~ Why Can't I Get a Job?

Published

I am about to lose my mind.

It has been nearly a YEAR since I had a job.

Everytime I think I have one, it falls through.

Nursing recruiters are just in it for the $$$ and are full of hot air.

When I try to bypass them and go directly through the hospital they seem hesitant to give me a FIRM offer.

Do they want to use AGENCY NURSES that bad? Travel nurses?

I can't even do that, because where I live there are no travel nurses and due to my not having worked for a year (for family reasons), alot of travel companies won't hire me.

Even if they did, I cannot get anywhere, my car is old and *SURPRISE!* I found out today that we have not had any car insurance since JULY!

Nobody bothered to tell us. Our agent throws the blame on the company and the company throws the blame on the agent, and meanwhile we have no car insurance now, which will make getting some very, very expensive, and we have a collections letter FROM THE COMPANY for one-hundred dollars they claim we owe because we didn't HAVE car insurance....and the reason we don't HAVE car insurance is because the change of bank draft notice never GOT FAXED TO THE MAIN OFFICE so how the #### is that OUR fault and why do WE have to pay a collections agency??? :angryfire

Where do you live that there are no nursing jobs? They're littered on the ground here.

Was there a problem with you going straight to work as soon as you got out of school? Sometimes employers have a problem hiring someone who has been out of school and not had active employment in their profession. It's going to be difficult for you to get a job at a hospital at this point probly, but i would think LTC facilities would be willing to hire you. Then after you get your feet wet again, start making contacts at the hospitals you want to work at.

There are lots of places where nursing jobs are scarce. I live in far north Texas. It's hard for nurses to find jobs here.

How far north?? could you cross the Red River???

Oklahoma NEEDS nurses! I see/hear ads on tv and radio everyday.

I agree, maybe get into it by going LTC route...they always need people.

Are you an LPN or RN?

Quite a few hospitals in OKC don't hire LPNs anymore, only RNs..could this be a problem where you are?

I hate insurance companies~~they'll do anything to make extra $$$$.

Good Luck!

You just have to be willing to relocate.

Peace,

Alot of nursing jobs up north as well...........

Are there really? Yes they are advertised but it does seem funny when so many nurses apply and don't get calls back..what is really going on sometimes I suspect (in my parts anyway) is they are looking for that 'perfect nurse'...but not too hard, because they can browbeat their staf into MOT, etc. and continue to blame their understaffing on a 'shortage'.

You can have a lapse in coverage if the car is not on the road for a period of time, sy for repairs or the driver is ill. Around here there are a lot of commercials for "minimal coverage, minimal price." Progressive (I think) ;its not the lizard one I know.

When you apply for nursing jobs do you set certain conditions? Conditions such as all days, no Sundays, must have on site childcare etc. you're painting yourself into a corner. Good luck

I agree. I think they just keep the ads running all the time so they can say "we're trying, we're trying..."; but they aren't really trying all that hard when they can "always get us to cover". And I think you're right, about that perfect nurse, one who won't make waves or complain, and will "dedicate" his/her time to the job.

I just don't think that there's that much incentive yet for them to worry about it. Right now they can cover most of the time with OT, mandatory and voluntary. That's probably cheaper than hiring, training, providing benefits, etc. In about 10 years when us more-than-50 year-olds (I'm talking about myself, not you) begin to actually retire either because we want to, or have to for bad health, is when the real shortage will be seen. The truly desperate shortage.

I work in ICU, and I think experienced ICU nurses are so scarce that our manager snaps up any she finds. We also have a transition/internship program that takes new grads. Our union contract apparently has the first clause in the US that states no MOT, so that helps. A lot of us do voluntary, but not until they start offering double time 48 hours before the unfilled shift.

I think the med-surg floors at my hospital are hiring pretty avidly too. I guess I thought the whole country was like this!
