This is for those of us that will be applying to LA county college of nursing and allied health's fall 2014 semester. I will be submitting my application for the basic RN program tomorrow... Yayyy!!! I am beyond excited, I can't believe this time has finally come!
Hi! The brochure is not too clear. Maybe call the school for more info? Im sure they would be happy to answer questions. Also, maybe there is an allnurses forum on that topic? I am also interested but i am going to wait to find out if i am accepted to the County program first. I found myself getting REALLY consumed with all of the different possibilities and it was stressing me out. Im anxiously waiting for acceptance statuses but have decided one step at a time. Lol. Btw, it has been 4 days since i last bit my nails!!!!
I called and indeed, as Enzyme mentioned, you can only enter once.
Hahaha.. I wish I had that "one step at a time" mentality... I'm trying to gather as much information about all the programs now because admission decisions are so spread out (April, May, June) and I would hate to lose money on deposits or even worse, be forced to make a quick decision without enough information. Even if I don't get accepted, I won't have that "what if" in the back of my head anymore..
LOL! I've gone 3 days... perhaps that may change next week for the both of us.
You are allowed to enter the choosing process only one time. Some schools do it during the first semester, some during the second. They have to do it before the first summer break as students that are chosen for the collab route have to take some BSN courses at Cal State during that first summer break, after the second nursing semester. So, the students are chosen way before the third semester. The point is, they look at the GPA of your previous one or two nursing semester (and also prereq and overall GPA). The GPA must be 3.0 or up to be considered. They do not perform the lottery unless there are more qualified applicants than they can accept. But, I talked to Cal State counselor and they say that sometimes if the number of applicants exceeds the number of seats it is not even the lottery. They look at many factors (i.e. volunteer work, previous degrees, GPA etc). They accept 8 students from each college. LACC has everything explained in details at their nursing depart, and their counselor is really great regarding this matter, he helps with everything. He also works at Cal State.I would not do the collab if I go to County, only because the cost would be crazy as the County's program sums up to $12,000, just for the ADN, if you add all the courses at Cal State during summers, plus the last year at Cal State, the number is crazy. I would only do it if I go to LACC. Plus, they at County are not that informative about this collab program, they don't offer counseling or orientation sessions for it.
WOW! Thank you for this information... it's very helpful.
So sometimes the number of applicants does not exceed? (Highlighted).
Since you stated that you will not do the collaboration at County, will you do it if you attend LACC?

Yes! I will do it if I attend LACC as the program's cost is more than half the County's program, so adding the cost for BSN courses won't hurt me as badly :-). If I attend County, I'll just do the ADN, get a job (hopefully :-), and then do the bridge later, while working and making some bucks :-). I do not want to be in over my head in debts. County's ADN program is expensive on its own.
It is true that the number of applicants sometimes does not exceed the number of spots open for the collab program. Believe it or not, according to my counselor, not too many people maintain the 3.0 or above GPA. Plus, the applicant must have 3.0 GPA overall and 3.0 GPA for the prereqs, and as you know all of the community college programs only require 2.5 GPA, and many with low GPA's can still enter the program thanks to the lottery system :-). But, obviously, those people cannot think about applying to Cal State's collaborative program. I hope I cleared it out a little :-)

P.S. Another disadvantage in doing the collab program with County is that County's semesters do not match Cal State's semesters. So, if you get into the collab program, you would have to take 3-4 BSN courses during summer (and those classes are not easy), and Cal State's summer semester ends almost mid September, whereas County's fall semester starts as as early as mid August. So how would we be able to take all those BSN summer courses at Cal State with County's fall classes starting before we are even done with the BSN summer courses. The classes might even collide, and even if they don't collide, handling such workload for 3-4 weeks would be mad, grades might suffer.
LACC's semesters match Cal State's semesters, so that is another advantage in doing the collaborative program with them, if I go there. I'll be happy to get in anywhere :-). i just want to start
Hey guys,
I'm waiting to hear from CSULA since I'm on the waitlist, but if I don't get in, I plan on applying to LAC USC for Spring 2015. I want to find the prerequisite equivalents to the classes like history, english, etc, but I cannot find it on the website.. Does anyone know where to find these at? I will have like an 84 when I apply. Good luck to everyone!

You would have to call them. You will not find it on the website. Only they can tell you what classes they would accept. I have previous degrees from Europe and I had to send them my agency evaluated transcripts so they can evaluate them and decide which classes they will take.

Well I was reading the handbook or something similar and it said that they accept classes under your schools humanities and us history section for graduating with an AS. I took all my classes here in LA at WLAC and SMC

Then, you're good. Check what classes are required for AS graduation at WLAC and SMC and those are the ones they will take. For me, History 11 or Pol Sci 1 is required at LACC, and English 101. But I took higher English as I plan to get my BSN at Cal State and they require higher English.

Hey jenn!
I really hope it works out with you and CSULA...
If not, you can always apply to County or CSULA again (if you decide you want to wait another year)!

It's ok.. To be honest the schedule for csula is kind of crazy... Sometimes you have class from 8-11 and then again from 6-8pm the same day with a huge gap in between.. I have a child so I don't have time for that!!! Lol I really like the schedule for la county and I've heard really good things about the program
