A teacher at a school in my district was just at a conference in SF and went home "feeling ill". Never mind that the school nurse just checked him- he is afebrile, no respiratory symptoms, no sore throat- just "feels ill". He proceeded to tell anyone and everyone as he exited the building that he was at a conference in SF and going home sick with possible coronavirus. ? Seriously the man should be fired for stupidity. Mass pandemonium and panic now...
I had a few teachers here that were freaking out about "The new disease- Corona Virus" we have international students that come to our school and majority are from China. So the first couple weeks being back from Christmas break were absolutely horrible. I just reminded the adults that if you look on the back of a Lysol bottle you will see that this is not a new illness, as well as you need to be more worried about the Flu that the students are spreading then the Corona Virus.
The students did so much better than the adults, instead of adding to the hysteria they took it upon themselves and raised money to purchase gloves and masks to be sent to China.
so my supe wants me to visit *all* the classes and talk to them about hygiene in a non-threatening way. First of all, I'm mad 'cause I was already to say to the classes "Wash your hands, or else!!"
Second: I am ONE person. I have a vaccine audit next week and 40+ visits per day. I have at least 32 classes to visit to see everyone - and that's with trying to catch the middle schoolers en masse. If I spend 5 minutes on average per class, the time commitment is over 2 1/2 hours. Not including the time it takes me to get there and the time to prep for this (making posters, etc)
Third: it IS going to create a bit of hysteria. Nearly every class I've been to so far has brought up corona virus. Nothing like feeding into the panic.
Finally: They seem to want me to make executive decisions on WHAT cleaner should be used. But when I started here many cleaners were nixed to use green cleaners. OY!!

I got that directive yesterday, except I had to address the whole student body at one time after mass. I was having anxiety since yesterday evening when I was told. Thankfully mass was cancelled so I didn't have to stand up in front of them, but I didn't dodge that bullet, I had to address them over the loud speaker which still gave me anxiety. Not my finer moments I might add I am not a public speaker.
I just received an email from my principle that our Superintendent wants us to send an email out to all the parents stating that we need to know what their travel plans are during Spring break which is next month.
First getting parents to comply to this means that they need to comply in the first place, which they won't. Second how many do you think are going to tell us the truth of what their travel plans are going to be.
This is getting out of control!!

I've been doing education for elementary kids. It's been such a busy week with that added to my day. It's been mostly light and teaching a handwashing song, observing hand washing.
Also about cleaners--we've always used "green" cleaners plus clorox wipes. Today I came into my office to find a big open canister of Comet plus bleach in my bathroom. I guess we're bleaching now and leaving poisons around the school in areas the kids can reach. The extra fun part is I'm allergic to bleach.
I sent a powerpoint with CDC videos. Teachers reviewed first and then showed students.

Instead of going to each class do you think you can make announcement about hygiene over the loud speaker? I discussed proper hygiene during our morning announcement and posted what I discussed in the bulletin board. Also, our teachers had the option to play one or the other (links below) during homeroom. We are hoping the information we provided to our students will help calm any anxiety they may be having.

Easy reading.

I doubt they'll let me. I tried to talk the building principals into letting me speak after the assembly speaker we had yesterday was done - I could have captured 5 grades in 2 talks, but that was nixed. So much for trying to be efficient. I'll just continue to plug along. On the plus side, I've been making a point to tell the kids during each of my talks that there's nothing I can do for a cold and that I just remind them of the same 3 interventions: wash hand, drink water, don't touch face. Maybe that'll slow down that parade...nah!!

Do you have TV, sometimes I go on and do that. Much easier! or maybe video and email everyone to show in their classroom?

My coworker's 2nd grader had a friend over after school yesterday and she caught them playing "coronavirus" game. They were basically playing doctor but also telling the "sick" person not to come near them and making masks out of wash cloths.
