Looking for fellow black nurses!

Published

I am looking for other black nurses (actually minority nurses) to communicate and network with. Although I come from an area with a pretty even mix of races in the nursing field there are very few other black nurses, I have dealt with many unique experiences and I would like to hear what others are going through, triumphs, successes, let downs, failures......I have looked everywhere and I can not find any group to fill this need. This is the largest nursing network on the web right now so I know that we are here!

Hi jtmonique,

I am a LPN entering my third semester I will be a GN in December 2010. I would really like to communicate and network with other black nurses.

Hello, I have been an LPN for 2 years, almost an RN. and yes we are out here. I live in delaware and there are nurses from every country here. I looove being a nurse, and allowing all the lil A.A girls that yes they can be nurses too!:heartbeat

Hello glad to meet you guys! I know we exist which is why I am reaching out. I am hoping that this site will add a board for AA nurses, they have a mens board so hey why not? I come from a family of nurses so I did not realize that there were not more black nurses untill I got out in the world and it was a shock!

Hi jtmonique :)

I'm also a AA student nurse and I think you have a great idea in networking on this site. I'm planning to join the NBNA (http://www.nbna.org/) soon, so I hope that helps with networking too. I'm the first nurse in my family, so the nursing school experience is new to me and my family. Anyhoo, its great to meet you and I hope we find some way to network here soon!

you should write to the admin help desk, and ask.

i've seen enough threads on this board, that indicate aa nurses have some very distinct issues in the workplace.

hope all works out for you.

Hi jtmonique!

Thanks for starting this thread. I graduated from a BSN program a few wks ago and should be taking the NCLEX in Jan (!!!). I think it would be a great idea to open a forum for Black Nurses, along with other Minority Nurses, who experience distinct workplace issues that others may not. It would be sooo nice to be able to openly chat about these issues without having to explain or defend ourselves.

Great idea!

Hello, I'm a RN from SC. Currently working on my BSN, have two semesters left. Was a LPN and worked in public health, which I loved! Plan on going back into public health, once I finish my BSN. I'm AA and always get hit with the line "are you the cna". Which there is nothing wrong with being a cna, but most AA are stereotype in the health care field....plus the numerous of other issues that we have to deal with.

I was just thinking about this line while in the shower today...I agree nothing wrong with being a cna but why is that always the assumption? When I graduated at the pinning they did the nurses oath and had all of the nurses stand and say it my instructors were like your mother is a licensed nurse wow....I was thinking *** they knew she worked in healthcare but who knows what they assumed.

lol. One time I was caring for a pt and the aids kept coming to me and saying your pt wants to see you. I immediately went in her room and she says, oh, well can you hand me that pillow. I do and then leave the room. Then a few minutes later the aid came up to me again and their like Tiffany your pt wants to see you go in there. So I go in there and I say, Hey, can I help you? She goes. Oh, well can you get me a glass of cranberry juice. I fetch her the juice and ask if she needs anything else. And she says no that's all. A few minutes later my supervisior comes up to me and says, Tiffany your pt says that she hasn't seen you since she got to the floor. You know we don't allow that, you've got to get in there right now! I say, well I've been in there! She says, the pt says she hasn't seen you. My supervisior insists on coming in the room with me and she says to the pt hello, this is your nurse! Then she and her family suddenly goes... OOOOOOHHHH! I'm so sorry, I thought you were the aid. I was wondering why you kept coming in and asking if I need anything.

LOL. Sometimes tho being black works for your advantage when the pt is annoying. I've went in the room before with an agitated pt and asked them if they needed help and they said, GET MY NURSE! And I say, let me know when you see her... LOLOL!!!!! so I can't really always complain...
