I just graduated from a nursing school in the phils. I wasn't able to take the local board bec. my immigrant visa was about to expire.I was lucky that i was able to finish my course there. My question is do you really have to be a local board passer so you will be eligible to take the CA NCLEX here?I mean even as an immigrant? And for all those foreign grads how long did it take for your application for licensure to be processed? just wondering....
hello,
Regarding you're question of should you call them to verify your application packet, I suggest its a good thing to do. It happened to me too. They replied so late that I had to called them so I think it's better to call them right away. In my case, it only took 2 months to receive my eligibility. And you are right, my friend is also a license in Cali and he left the PH without taking the local board exam because of his visa issue and it was fine as long as you have the explanation for that. Goodluck to you!
so wait a minute.. may i ask the same question again at the expense of sounding really stupid and dense. i'm a 4th year nursing student, i don't want to take the local boards. i definitely have no plans of practicing here. i'm graduating this october. i'm visiting california in a few months as a tourist. sooo - i don't need to take the local boards?? so how do i go about it then? any tips, advice? feel free to talk to me blow by blow in detail like a moron, i welcome any input. i need it.
thanks

welcome to the site
i would suggest a good read on this forum.
it is not acceptable to use your tourist visa with plans to stay in the us plus currently no visas so you are not able to do this. the process will take several months and all depends on where you want to work. you apply to their board of nursing bon and follow requirements for foreign trained nurse which may mean ces from cgfns. once you have met licensure for the state you will get ok to sit nclex and then apply to pearsonvue and arrange to sit the exam. once you have passed nclex you then need to apply for visa screen certificate and pass any language exams. you are looking at 12 months plus to complete everything and hopefully by then retrogression may be sorted. everyone is currently affected by retrogression regardless of country
More of a question, pardon me ignorance4th year student graduating this October. Do not want to take the local boards. Visiting California in a few months as a tourist. I don't need to take the local boards? Really really? I'd love that. So how do I go about it?
have explained in previous post
You need a complete set of transcripts, apply to BON which will take several months, as long as BON does not require a license from country you just need to add letter explaining you have not taken local boards. otherwise have a good read on here especially threads on Primer to working in the US and retrogression
The process will take several months, no visas so waiting will last several months to years depending on how they resolve retrogression. It is illegal to enter US with intension of ajusting visa (AOS) and currently can not be done as no visas to adjust.
Please take time to read on here
CA does not require the CES, they do their own credentials eval. But as Anna mentioned, there are no visas currently available, and that means that you cannot stay in the US with the tourist visa and expect to be able to work. And even if they were available, taking cuts in line would not be a good thing to do at this time. There are many that have been waiting out of the country for more than a year since the retrogression started.
And you cannot even start the process to apply until you have a completed set of transcripts. What you decide to do about your local exam is your choice, but just so you are aware, it is getting more difficult to get petitioned by a hospital in CA. And it is only going to get harder as the number of graduates from your country go thru the roof.
