Let's call Oprah

Published

Maybe someone with the time and desire can try to convince Oprah's staff to do an expose on nurses and how we are treated? My opinon is she is a corporate suck-up and wont touch this.

Maybe you're not, but plenty of your colleagues across the country are. We should care about each other. Just because it may be comfy in your corner doesn't mean there aren't a lot of truly horrendous situations out there.

Online communication leaves much to be desired.

I do care.

I just wanted some examples of what folks were talking about.

As now there have been since I posted.

I lean in favor of Sharon's posts.

I don't think Oprah would be doing us any good service. Since she did a program on Druggie Nurses" that really puts us all in a good light. She is so hypocritical- sitting there with her millions while showcasing the plight of the homeless and people making minimum wage. with her money what does she do wake up every morning wondering what disadvantage soul she can help today...sounds kind of like a god.People shouldn't be allowed to make the money she does.

Ok, this is a bit hypercritical. Opera did come from a hard background, and worked her tail off. Yes she has made a lot of money, and because the first black woman to become a BILLIONARE. She doesn't stuff her money away though. She does give a lot back. She has helped a lot of people, and put many million to help others. There is nothing wrong with having money, especially if you earned it. No I don't like the Nurse Druggie thing, but that is an issue as well, reguardless of whether we presonally want it brought into the light, it does exist. You shouldn't be so hypercritical just because you feel she doesn't support just the issues YOU want her too. She has done great things, and helped Many Many people. She deserves some credit for that.

And I'm not even a fan...lol. I hate talkshows.

Oprah doing a show on the nursing shortage and the relationship to mortality and morbidity does have potential. I don't regularly watch her show, but have seen many shows over the years where she exposes some major problem. However, my concern is she would invoke fear in the public without any good solutions. Also, I don't think her audience are the ones who need to be targeted with this information because her show is on during working daytime hours.

A couple years ago Oprah did a "My favorite things" Christmas special (where the audience gets gobs of free stuff) to an audience of school teachers. I do think this would be excellent for an audience of nurses!

I totally agree with you.

I agree, Oprah is a forifice! She seems so nice and approachable but that is faaaaaaaaaaar from the truth! Back in the early 90s before she had her private jet she was on one of my flights and the flight attendants in first class wanted to throw themselves over the granade. She wanted to know why there were no black flight attendants in FC and freaked out when we arrived at a gate that was distant from baggage claim.

Her latest tantrum over in Paris with Hermes just shows how fake she is. I don't think she would do a show about nurses (except if it had a negative connotation)

Specializes in Geriatrics, acute hospital care, rehab.
Maybe a 20/20 expose'

Doesn't John Stassel (sp) work with 20/20? OMG, he could interview ME anytime!!!!!!:heartbeat

 I think it is appropriate to have nurses on a forum on national television in primetime. Not the nurses the administrators would choose, but a few well-spoken nurses, who are not afraid to speak openly and honestly about nursing! While I am all for teachers and value them, I am sick to death of hearing their praises, the money and pension they receive for their jobs and the value others place on them. I am not sorry to say my main concern is money. What other job do you know of that requires one to be exposed to abuse from patients and/or their families, exposure to deadly and infectious diseases, mandation of overtime, continuing education, etc, while maxing out on their salaries in five years, maybe having a 1-3% payraise based on subjectivity by one's supervisor? Toss in the fact if a patient and/or family has a complaint about a nurse or his/her performance, the nurse is always presumed to be guilty. He or she is also the last one to know. Secretive meetings are held without the nurses knowledge while superviors "gather the facts." I have not had this happen to me personally, but have witnessed it on a number of occasions in my >20 years of critical care nursing. I could go on and on! So if we want a forum to discuss our problems, does anyone have an opinion on how to start? While I do not agree with everything she writes, Suzanne Gordon would be a good jumping off point.

oprah.....no way...but I can see someone like Anderson Cooper taking up the task of interviewing and telling a honest story about the stress and selflessness in nursing and how it compares to other professions in regards to stress, hazards, pay, and last but not least respect ( and that means someone elses opinion) without fear of reprocussion or penalty!

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Whoever said Oprah was a journalist? She's a talk show host. I think that she can handle serious topics and her history proves it.

Is she a rich, spoiled celebrity? Yes, and if I had millions of admirers and a billion dollars I'd be a bit spoiled too.

Should she champion and take up our cause? It's up to her, but I agree with the others there are better avenues for getting our word out.

Don't underestimate Ophra though. While she might not be a serious journalist, the woman has power and influence. Having her do a positive show about the nursing situation in America certainly wouldn't hurt if it's done with our interests in mind.

Maybe a 20/20 expose'

Yea, 20/20 is a lot more credible. 60 minutes would be a good one, too.

60 Minutes????? :nono:

Have you lost your mind? Or have you merely forgotten the "fake but accurate" memos.

Dr. Phil only did a special on nurses b/c he stuck his foot in his mouth by saying that he's seen a lot of "cute little nurses" hooking up with doctors so they won't have to work anymore. I doubt Oprah would touch this. Perhaps we should try muckraker Marvin Zindler.

My Brother knows Marvin Zindler. He'll probably do it...
