Doesn't it just drive you insane when someone tells you that Mr. Smith's O2 STAT is 96%?

It's O2 SAT people! Sat, short for saturation. I even hear respiratory therapists saying this. I am sooooo tempted to say something next time, but I know it's just petty, so I needed to vent here. Thank you.

Not sure diverticuli is an incorrect term. Diverticula is the singular form. I always thought diverticuli was the plural. Plenty of hits came up when I Googled it.

Things do change over time, don't they? My Taber's (copyright 1956!) lists "diverticulum" as the singular and "diverticula" as the plural.

I loved this post!:clphnds:LOL

I was wondering about something someone posted. Isn't hepatosplenomegaly correct? I also hate when people are alert and orientated. Or if they have a "decu-bite-us"

Diverticulum is singular; diverticula is plural. I encounter this every day at work. Google is right when it asks, "Do you mean diverticula?" when "diverticuli" is entered as a search term. This term hasn't changed from the 1956 Taber's. It's a very common error, since many doctors say it incorrectly.

With new Joint Commission restrictions, we might see situations where de-cu-BITE-us in the orifice.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Well, what do you know. I stand corrected. Even so, you might be fighting a losing battle on this one. Diverticuli sounds correct to a lot of us. Right up there with hippopotami. :D I think I'll switch to calling them pesky little intestinal pouches.

Wiki says:

Nucular is an ad hoc spelling of a metathetic pronunciation of the word nuclear, representing the IPA: /ˈnjuːkjələr/ pronunciation of that word instead of the more widely accepted /ˈnjuːkliːɚ/.

While most dictionaries do not list the pronunciation as correct, some recognize it because of its increased usage.[1]

Being Captain of the local grammar police I have, however, decided that it's better to just let it slide than get an ulcer. It still chaps my hide though......

Oxygen SATCH, TIE-nol, Appendix as a plural word.........ah yes I will tolerate it well-(I will, I will, I will)

This isn't a medical term of course, but I've been amused by the recent orange juice commercial on TV in which the spokesman touts his "Florda" product. I'm sure it's a regional pronunciation (the female voice-over also pronounces it "Florda")

Yes I have seen it also and thats what I was saying earlier alot (but not all) of what people claim are mispronunciation are not necessarily mispronunciations but just how people pronounce things in their area and you can not make people change to be something they are not. Such as with the southern language yes it is strange at times but hey most people have no problem with it but there is always gonna be that small and I do mean SMALL group of people that would make fun of anything or any body--so I do my best when someone mispronounces something to find out its correct pronunciation and help them or I simply ignore it and go on with my own business--there are words I have great difficulty with but thank GOD the nurses I work with know this and are very patient cause even they have words that they too have problems with--everyone just needs to have a little more patience and understanding with others thats all:nurse:

We shouldn't be using our knowledge of grammar, pronunciation, and the rest to make others feel small. No matter how well educated people are, if they use their skills to bludgeon others, they are just plain ignorant.

That said, it's nice to have a safe place to vent. Letting off steam here might make it easier to be gracious elsewhere.

That's why this thread is a great idea. It gives people a chance to nitpick in a fun way without making it personal. :)

It's funny because 1 person says something, another corrects him, then another corrects the corrector and so on. Quite enjoyable. :D

While I do agree with what you said I do find joy in being able to wield a word as a sword when accosted by those that can't. Words ARE the best weapons. ;)
