LAC+USC interview new grad RN

Published

Hey guys, I have a question. I had an interview with LAC+USC and received a letter that I passed the oral exam. I read in the letter that they are going to contact me if positions open up. I am a new grad RN. Have you been in my situation? How long does it take until they call you? Do we have another interview after the oral interview or this is it? Please share your experience with me..thank you

@Nurse_Jaydee: how long did it take for you to get cleared for the livescan and get your physical(s) scheduled? I'm hitting the 3 wk mark just to see my status on fingerprinting, and they keep telling me the approval i'm waiting for is really the approval of the budget to move forward w/ my hiring process. If it's taking this long just for the livescan result, I wonder how long it'll take to get the results for my 2 physicals (which i'm still waiting to get scheduled for). sigh. How long did you wait for both your livescan and physicals to be cleared altogether? thanks! :)

I think the whole process took 8-9 weeks (from Live Scan to physical to being cleared). After I did my Live Scan, it took 5 weeks to get called for the physical. Hang in there! :)

Oh I see. It helps to know a rough estimate of how long others had to wait before getting cleared for everything. Thanks Nurse_Jaydee!

Nurse Jaydee,

I just called nurse recruitment. By the annoyed tone of her voice, it sounds like they get the same calls quite frequently. I asked her if i had fallen off the hired list, her reply (without asking my name, mind you) : you havent fallen off, just waiting for that budget to clear. then i mentioned that there are new hires of the same cohort of 98 nurses that already started, do you know what determines who starts and who doesnt because i thought the budget hadnt cleared? Her reply: wish i had the answer to that myself.

Anyway, thats what I got from following up. Don't really know what else to do but show up there in person and ask?

What are you doing in the meanwhile Nurse Jaydee? Do you work some place else?

Awww... that sucks! I don't like calling too much cuz I always hear the same thing... Budget, budget, budget... I would appreciate it more if they checked to see what was going on with each individual person. If it has to do with the budget per unit, then at least they could have some small idea which group of new hires could start next. I'm sorry, RN, BSN, PHN. Wish your conversation with them could have been more informative.

I used to work in Med/Surg at a hospital nearby, but when I got pregnant my husband and I decided that I should stay home and take care of our kids. I have a 3 year old (just turned 3 a few days ago) and a 9 month old baby. I am enjoying my time with my children. Other than that, not much but waiting on a start date like everyone else.

Hi Everyone!

I'm an RN with about 8 years experience, and today I had my initial RNI interview. My intention is to get into the ER at USC, and I'm really excited! My question for you all is, about how long did it take from your initial interview to getting a letter in the mail stating whether you passed it or not?

Thank you so much!

Hi RNBSN22!

I had my initial RN I interview (civil service exam) during the last week of October and I received the letter informing me that I passed just about the second week of January. It was a long wait! Now I don't know if I should wait for them to call me or should I keep calling county hospitals?

Thanks for the reply ;) I was told towards the end of my civil service exam to look on the website and call them regarding the open positions that are posted. I walked out of the interview feeling good, but the 4-6 weeks she said I would have to wait for the result is going to drive me crazy! Has anyone not passed or have known of someone not passing? I know it's probably just the overanalytical side of me, but ahhhhhh! Do you have a specific department that you want to work in? GOOD LUCK!

Hi! I was also hired as RN in MICU..it went on smoothly from my interview til my physical exam. August 5, 2011 when I received 2 copies of my physical result. First copy was forwarded to nurse recruitment office & the other copy was with me which was instructed by the nurse to give it to my supervisor on my first day of work. ---- told me that they will call me as soon as they will received the approval papers of the so-called budget. I really dont know what went wrong that until now I havent gotten any call from nurse recruitment. Im started to feel hopeless because everytime I call them, they said the same thing..they're still waiting for the approval papers. I remembered during my interview, the manager told me that after 7 years its only now that the government released budget again that's why they started hiring nurses...I've been waiting and hanging for almost six months already. I felt a little frustrated also when I read some nurses who've started already. Please advise!

@ CML63, that sounds like a pretty long wait... but once you are hired they can't "unhire" you back right? oh and did you have your acls when you applied for micu?

Yes, tough decision to work with the county. Some of my friend's passed on accepting new grad positions with them after getting another offer from other hospitals, partly due to they had student loans needing to start repayment and for just regular daily living expenses (rent, car payments, cell, etc). While they went pass the interview stage, etc, they didn't take the offer, as hard as that was. Today, they're glad they did that, as some units haven't even started (months passed) and still be in the same boat of unemployed and then, keep waiting for the carrot on the stick.

It's nuts to have to wait after being "hired" with no confirmed set date to prepare for or get notice, "sorry, but your first day to report to work has been postponed...again". They really leave some of the new grads up in the air until the "budget" gets approved and with the terrible CA economy and with the current governor in the seat, who knows, when certain units will get their funds. Budget, budget, budget, budget, that's all you'll hear all week long.

There's nothing that even HR or the nursing managers can do other than stall those waiting to get their schedule to work since they are also left in the dark with upper management being tight-lipped. Why? Because they don't know either. It's kind of like the blind, leading the blind.

Just had my civil service interview today. It didn't take too long. But now the waiting game.
