I have worked at a hospital in the Puget Sound that had a ratio of 1:5/6 with RN/LPN partnered together. When an Rn was alone, the ratio was 1:3/4. The charge took no pts. unless the censues was high. This ratio was on nites at a Group Health Hospital, on tjheir med-surg/tele units. Anytime the agency called for me to work at this hospital I always said yes, and would even accept late calls.

Do you think the better ratios would bring more nurses back???
Especially if well advertised???
Yes, I do think better ratios would bring nurses back. It's certainly the main question I'll be asking in my search for a new job. Why the search? Because where I work now I have such a patient load that I believe it is a law suit just waiting to happen. There is no way anyone can keep all the balls in the air at once. If I were to read an ad stating 1:4 ratios in a general unit right now, I'd be knocking the door down!
UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC has a MED/SURG nurse patient ratio of 1:4/5/6 ON ALL SHIFTS!!!!!!! Came here 12 years ago with nurse patient ratio my main priority. I interviewed up and down the east coast for 18 months before I found a hospital and area with characteristics I wanted. There are many hospitals out there that will state a certain ratio, but until you wait outside and grab a nurse going home and ask them what their day was like, do you hear the truth. Good Luck!

Most of the hospitals around me have 1:4 or 1:5 ratios on Med/Surg during days. Where I work, the load may go to 1:6 on a high-census day, but in that case we usually have one or two floats to help out. Charge doesn't take an assignment on days, but does on eves and nights. Eves and nights ratios are a little higher, with nights going up to 1:7.

Hi all, do you know a hospital that is practicing what is being preached. Decent ratios so that patients and staff are happy and well cared for? For example, anyone here have 1 RN to 4 pt ratios?? On their general med/surg floors??? How about 1:5??? Is it all RN or mixed with LPN???
I heard that Kaiser Permanante had advertised at one time this. Is it still true????
Do you believe that if ratios were practiced like this that more nurses would come back to hospital nursing?
