Knocked off my feet

Published

hi,

i need some sound advice about my situation. i completed 3.5 semesters of an acelerated bsn program in the boston area and was dismissed due to a clinical failure 3 weeks from graduation. i had excellent grades, and even made the dean's list a few times. (and for the record, i did not put a patient in any harms way. it was strickly a political/personality situation, and unfortunately i have no recourse so i need to move forward.)

i've looked into a few other schools, but they do not transfer upper lever [color=#ae04e8]nursing courses which means i'd have to re-take nearly all of the classes i already passed. (that is if they accept me because of my clinical failure!!) this is a really tough pill to swallow, and i'm not getting any younger.

i can't fathom starting over from scratch again, so i'm looking to anyone in this forum who may have some reliable advice. (i was told from one school that they would accept two classes, but that was about it. they also have a board you can petition, but that is a time consuming process and it's not always a guarantee.)

will i be forced to watch all my hard-earned credits drift out to sea??? it's just heart-breaking.

i'm so close to finishing.....i need some realistic ideas about other options. are there any schools in the boston area that will tranfer my hard-earned upper-level nursing credits??? unfortunately, relocating is not an option for me at this time.

praying for a response(s) that will set me on a new track so i can finish what i started.

Were you able to challenge the clinical "failure"? Are you certain that you've exhausted all avenues with your school?

Could you explain what you mean by a political/personality situation? If you feel you were dismissed because a teacher didn't like you, why aren't you challenging this? Whatever it is you are not telling us must play a role in your decision. I guess you can keep applying to different schools and see what happens. Much Luck to you!

Hi ~

Thanks for your reply, my situation was very complicated & I'm not going to get into details here, it's inappropriate. I'm simply looking for advice on how to move forward. I appreciate you well wishes though....REDFACE

Have you looked into the Excelsior program? I don't know anything about it but I think they accept nursing classes as a transfer. If you go to the student tab and go to distance learning, there are discussions under there...or just Google them. Good luck!

I would continue to petition your school to reverse the decision made if you can, it would probably be over a shorter time than retaking classes elsewhere. Fight it to the bitter end! :yeah:Meanwhile, keep looking at other options. GOOD LUCK.

You can't bridge without some very specific clinical background.

i would seek legal counsel just to be sure all venues have been covered. challenge the decision......being in that part of the country myself i know how......shall we say......different things are viewed, i have found since moving to the area that there is a level of judgement and personal preferences highly involved in managerial/administrative decisions that is intolerant of others to the point of being biased, bigoted, and prejudiced. not know the "story" it is difficult to "judge" how right or wrong the situation is but i'm sorry you are going through this..... i have no idea what transfers and what doesn't i would just start hitting the phine lines to challenge the decision and find a way to transfer them.....good luck.

Just for the record, if you tell only half of the problem, you get only half of the help. I would honestly suggest you search yourself as to why it was a political/personality issue that caused your failure to begin with. I mean, outside of extremely egregious issues, I'd have done my best to get along & get through.

Thanks ESME 12, your comments are VERY insightful. I've exhausted all of my options, and I am hitting the phone lines, networking & anything else I can think of...including posting on this forum! It's been very frustrating, embarrassing, and extremely unjust, but I NEED TO MOVE FORWARD. So any advice is MUCH appreciated!!!

Been there done that.......not with school but attacked with prejduce and bias based on personal opinions and jealousy in the job arena.....all I can offer are hugs. Peace.

Gosh you know, I remember fearing this too in my final year of my BScN. I too made the Dean's honor list 2x, and I had top grades. Thankfully I finished my degree, but man did it challenge me to bite my tongue on many occasions. Particularly due to the fact that I'm a male and quite often the male perspective or take on things gets forgotten in the shuffle of nursing school. Now, I'm going to say something and I don't want to be attacked or called a "bad nurse" for it. I love nursing, but the bedside reality and what you think it will be like when you're still in school are two totally different experiences. If I could go back in time and change degrees in 2nd year I would. Again, I love nursing; I just wish I could nurse. Between budget cuts, chronic short staffing, and an increasing number of patients living with long-term chronic illnesses and multiple co-morbidities every year, bedside nursing IS NOT what it should be. Our workload is borderline ridiculous. Bottom line, take what credits you can and do a B.Pharm or something else health related that interests you. BAPsych, BS in Biomedical and apply to med school.

So I guess what I'm saying is, perhaps you should revisit if nursing is for you and if you can accept its shortcomings then you will persevere and become a nurse through a different school. But if you already know that its not for you, or have any doubts, move on to a different degree. Yes it absolutely sucks that you have lost credits, but all is not a total loss. You can still salvage many credits and press forward.

I really do feel for you. I loathed the overpaid and under worked matriarchy that ran my nursing school.
