Just because you are a nurse...

Nurses Activism

Just because you are a nurse doesn't mean you have to be a Democrat or Liberal. I remember when the healthcare bill was first being discussed everyone on this site seemed to be pushing leftist ideals and it was a sin to be against Obamacare. I don't see anyone hyping it now. I thought it was a bad bill then and apparently it's a bad bill now. I wonder how many nurses are still siding with the Progressives. I remember how hard I got blasted on this site for speaking against that bill.

I am a registered Republican, have been since the day I turned 18. As I have gotten older I have found that I do tend to have a libertarian political view (I want the government out of my pants and my pockets). I was against the bill before just as I am now ( I am not against universal health care all together, just that bill). I did not vote for Obama either. Although I did not really like anyone that was running this time around. I am kinda of an odd duck; I am an OB nurse believing strongly in women's rights that graduated from a hippy dippy Holistic nursing program; but I am so far from being a Democrat that some times I have to change the news channel when they come on so I don't throw the remote at the T.V. (oh, and I can not stand Michael Moore:lol2:)

Not singling anyone out, but I think the reason that a lot of people assume that nurses are all Democrats on here is because often Democrats are the most outspoken.

I just don't like the way it has been politicalized (sic).
Of course, using deprecating labels like "Obamacare" is precisely the kind of politicization that you evidently lament.

I've never favored hyping anything, particularly something so important as trying to fix our horribly broken health care system.

I agree with you that it was a bad bill before and is much worse now. Where we likely disagree is on what makes it bad. To me it's bad because it continues to rely on the for-profit model of insurance coverage - and in fact, provides millions of new customers - and it does nothing to force rational pricing onto the drug companies. US consumers will continue to subsidize pharma R&D for the rest of the world.

Personally, I hope to see this bill fail... but only because it fails to address what are the primary problems with the present system.

Edited to add: Oh, and I'm no liberal and no Democrat. I eschewed joining either of those corrupt political establishments long, long ago. I just believe that a rational health care system will be an asset to our country, spur entrepreneurship, contribute to a more efficient workforce, and provide some stability.

This libertarian is not so convinced that "democrats" are the most vocal group...

I like the Libertarian platform.

There are things about the libertarian platform that I do not agree with, but that is true (moreso) for me relative to the democrat or republican platforms as well.

Lots of people seem to be for universal health care, but not "Obamacare" or not just "not like that."

What would you propose instead?

So if you are agaisnt "Obamacare" or whatever other terms of endearment other choose to use, then you better have an alternative in place to validate your view? Can't a person admit that they don't know what the answer is, but believe that this current bill isn't it?

It's a complex issue. I seriously doubt anyone here or in the general public has a real good idea of what will "fix" US healthcare. We all want something better, but change can be scary.

We have to pass something so we can start improving the system. Frankly I think that reconciliation is already being discussed by the House, Senate and WH.

indeed...our current system is patently unsustainable...

So far, 81 house members have signed a letter urging the Senate to use reconcilliation to get this thing done.

Here's hoping they exercise some courage.

We have to pass a deeply flawed bill that the majority of Americans have clearly indicated is unsatisfactory so that we can start to fix it? That's a plan!

How about we scrap the thing without wasting any more time, energy or money and begin to craft a bill that offers the reforms Americans want: simplicity, choice, responsibility and accountability on the part of insurers and participants alike, and equal enforcement for all. No tax breaks or deals for unions or other special interest pay-backs.
