Hi all fellow OR nurses!! I just got hired as an OR nurse!! I am graduating nursing school in May, and have always wanted to work in the OR. I start my OR internship in July. I am super excited. Any advice from the seasoned OR nurses?? Thank you!

Congrats!!!!!! It's great to see the light at the end of the nursing school tunnel, isn't it? Good luck in the future!

Specializes in OR.

Congratulations!! It's a long and sometimes painful learning curve but in the end it's oh-so-worth it. There are many very useful threads which gives loads of advice. Check 'em out :)

If you always knew you wanted to do the OR, you will LOVE it. You'll definately have some bad days but just stick with it. The OR is like one big, happy, dysfunctional family!

Congratulations!

congrats and good luck!

may I ask, did you do an externship in the OR before graduation?

I just want to say congrats! I also will be accepting a job as an OR nurse tomorrow! I'll be moving from med-surg to OR, which I've always wanted to do. I hear it's an exciting, interesting career with some stresses and learning curve... but overall a field of nursing that is generally loved by those who do it.

So, again, congrats! And best wishes with the remainder of nursing school... it'll go by super fast!

Thank you! and best of luck to you as well!!

I did an externhsip over the summer in the PACU. If you can do an externship, do it!! It has defintitely given me an advantage!

Specializes in OR, community nursing.

I just finished 11 months of orientation at a Level II trauma center with 25 OR's. I run my own room now and I can't believe how much I have learned. Here's my advice:

1. Don't argue whether you are right or wrong (unless the patient is in immediate danger ... you are the patient's advocate) ... remember in the back of your mind that you will run your own room when you are on your own. You will have the opportunity to develop your own practice.

2. Team work is very important ... can't stress how important it is to get along with others.

3. When someone offers to help you, don't be shy to accept help. Don't let your pride get in the way. The problem is that many newbies don't know what they don't know.

4. Always listen to others' suggestion whether it is coming from a MD or CST or support tech. Sometimes they can be wrong. Important to figure out for yourself what is right or wrong. Use the AORN recommended practice as your guide.

5. Finally, OR is not everyone. I am not trying to discourage you. I have seen many who have come and gone. If the OR is not right for you, don't be afraid to find other opportunities. That's what so great about nursing. You do have options.

Congrats on your new journey!

Congrats!!! I am also a soon to be graduate. May 2009 and just got offered a position as an OR nurse! I cant believe it because it was quite an interview, I had to convince the managers and director to hire a new grad to the OR and I succeeded. I have 20 years previous health care experience that includes working in an OR. Im an older graduate and I know what I want and this was it!

congrats and good luck!
