  1. If you always knew you wanted to do the OR, you will LOVE it. You'll definately have some bad days but just stick with it. The OR is like one big, happy, dysfunctional family!
  2. Wow! That is so scary! I'd be especially nervous to have my name on the same documents as her if there were ever a court case later on. That would be a great issue for a lawyer to blow up! This person shouldn't even be given the chance to finish her schooling. This hospital is obviously trying to keep the issue on the down low to protect their reputation. I'd report the both of them if I had my name on the same paperwork as hers. I'd let the BON decide if an RN's role is "medication management" in the OR. What a shame.
  3. I have just started doing 3-11 charge at a smaller community hospital with 8 OR's. I have found that the techs can be very disrespectful. They try to make you look stupid in front of the MD's or act like they know everything. Any advice on this issue?
  4. Hi there, I was in a similar situation a year ago. I interviewed and was hired then I gave my old job 2 weeks notice. In that 2 weeks I became pregnant. I then panicked thinking how horrible it was to start this brand new job and how dissapointed they would be. I started and told the clinical educator. She just had me stand in the sub-sterile rooms during induction and I stayed out of pedi cases or any other cases that would be hazardous. It really wanst a problem at all. I work with 2 other pregnant women that wear wrap around lead during xrays. all 3 of us have perfectly healthy babies. It doesnt take long for gossip to fly in an OR and people to catch on that your pregnant. just tell the manager after your hired and explain how badly you want to work in the OR. I work with a girl that had no OR experience and she started when she was early in her pregnancy. Don't let your pregnancy get in the way!
  5. Hi there, I was wondering if you'd let me know any information that you find out. I'm considering moving to Jupiter or Palm Beach Gardens. I'm from Port Huron, MI. Do you have any kids? We were wondering about a good middle school, that has cheerleading. I've heard of these hospitals in the area. Jupiter Medical Center, palm beach gardens medical center, martin memorial, and saint marys. Hope that helps, Talia
  6. I'm speaking from experience. I got my RPN in Sarnia, Ontario and I wanted to upgrade to RN. I seen that the schools were not recognizing the work I did as an RPN so I looked in the USA. Just on the other side of Sarnia, Ontario there is a college in Port Huron, MI. At that college they have a 1 year LPN-RN articulation program. The only thing I had to do was send my transcripts, write MI NCLEX LPN, and prove I had 1,088 hrs of work experience as an RPN. I did one semester of pre-reqs and I will graduate after doing a full year of studies, this May. The school does everything for you regarding the student visa. I still live in Ontario and I just drive over the border each day. The only problem is that you can not come back to Ontario unless you upgrade more in the USA to get a BScN. Usually hospitals in the US pay for that though. If anyone is interested you can see for yourself at http://www.sc4.edu I was so frustrated with the way Canada treated RPN's that I don't even care to come back.
  7. Hello Joel, I am a fairly new RPN, and I searched out the same question. You'll hear yes and no from a variety of people and places. The true answer is no. RPN's aren't recognized under the NAFTA visa, only RN's. You could apply for a green card but your name would go to the bottom of the pile and it could take up to 3 years. I was so upset when I graduated because I couldnt find a job. Right now I have a casual position in Ontario where I live and I commute to the USA every day to a bridging program. I should have my RN in 1 year. As soon as I get it, I'll go to the USA. I've seen sign on and relocation bonuses for up to 10, 000. Good luck finding that in Ontario!!!
  8. Thank-you for clearing that up for me. Right now I am on a F-1 visa hoping for acceptance to the RN program, since it is half the time to do it in the USA. I live and work in Ontario and cross the border to go to school. I asked the immigration officer today and that is what she told me about working in the USA as an LPN. I went on the CGFNS website to do a bit of researching on it anyways. On the visascreen application http://www.cgfns.org/pdf/VisaScreenApplication.pdf there is a section where the person applying has to write in their professional code (pg 7). One of the options is "LPN" So this made it sound believeable. Next question...Can I take this test asap while still an LPN, so I can get it out of the way before getting my RN education. Finally, one more question. What is the difference between the CGFNS certification and the CGFNS visascreen? Are there any other tests that I can get out of the way now? I really appreciate your time.
  9. I've heard many rumours that Canadian LPN's can work in the USA and I've heard that they can't. Are there any Canadians LPN's that are working in the USA right now??? I talked to an immigration officer and she told me to first get my CGFNS but then it could be difficult to find an employer to sponser a Canadian LPN. She said Hawaii will. Does anyone know more about this or have first hand experience??? I don't want to get the CGFNS and then find out it is impossible to work. Thanks
