Just failed Nclex-RN - Hints on Studying

Published

I just failed my first Nclex-RN and off course I'm dissapointed since I tought I was well prepared for it. As soon as I walked inside of that exam room I realized that my anxiety level was going to interfere with my concentration abilities. For those who just passed, Congratulations! maybe you can share some ideas on how did you preper yourself for the exam, and what techniques did you use to keep your level of anxiety to a minimum? I appreciate your input, thanks.

I recently took the Nclex-Rn on Monday, August 6, 2007 and found out 48hrs later that I failed at 80 questions. This is such a disappointment and an embarassment. I graduated from nursing school with honors and this is a shock. When I walked out of the exam I felt indifferent but did not feel as though that I had failed. I am now faced with being demoted to tech position or to resign. I feel as though I am going to resign so that I can intensely focus on doing questions (which i did 4000?'s) and reviewing content through the pearson/prentice hall comprehensive book. I think that my problem was soley doin the questions and not reviewing the comprehensive books enough coupled with working too much. The next time I am going to be ready with a clearer head while being more relaxed. Pray for me.

Thanks

You definately seem to be made of the right stuff to be a successful nurse...perseverence ...that will be an important trait to have in your nursing career...keep on keeping on...you are and inspiration to those of us who haven't reached your level yet. Thanks for sharing!;)

Hi,

Now, I am worried. I have the NCLEX in 2 days and stopped reviewing content from Saunder's to answer questions from Kaplan Q bank/Question Trainer.

In your opinion, was focusing on questions with rationales..not the way to go???

Thanks for any advice.

Sa Yat Nova,

With two days to go I'd focus more on relaxation. Let's be realistic. Whatever you have content-wise is pretty much it with two days to go.

I'd go with the practice questions. It's a good way to not only apply what you know but to practice thinking about the questions.

It's time to let it go and set your mind on taking the test. Don't fret that you don't have it all down but that you will use what you do have.

Good luck.

i am with u guys as well..i took mine 8/7 had 160q's and didnt know wat to think of it after i was done. found out today that i failed and now i have to start all over again. it sux.

hmm.. hearing you guyz makes me anxious! ive got 11days to go before my exam! i hop i nail it once! im using saunder's q&a review, fryes nursing bullets and im also enrolled in Kaplan online, still i feel im not prepared to take the exams.:uhoh3:

this must be hard but be positive you completed nursing school and WILL PASS THIS CRAZY TEST!!!!, what worked for me was kaplan, i did all of their questions and read the rationals. i also did a little bit of saunders. as for the anxiety; it's normal to be anxious, try to breathe i know is hard beleive me, i scheduled my test in the afternoon to give me enough time to get to the testing center and have a good lunch (small lunch) it decreased my anxiety. Maybe this helps you.

BEST OF LUCK!!!!

Yes, I feel as though I piggybacked on my success in school, coupled with being overworked on my job by following the preceptors schedule of 40 hours a week led to my demise. I only did questions and rationales without ever really going into this thing fully studying one good comprehnsive book when I was averaging at least 70%-79% in everything. Good luck though, once I receive my printout of what I did wrong i will post.

I also failed my Nclex-rn exam, with 265 questions...I feel so terribly alone and devastated, knowing all my friends, passed the exam...I use Saunder's compre and also took Kaplan review and answer Mosby delagation...I don't know how to start to review again...all my efforts come to nothing...i'm afraid in my second attempt i might fail again..pls enlighten my mind..

Sorry to hear that,

I am going through the same thing too and all I can advise is to be strong as I am trying to be and keep pushing foward while surrounding yourself with positive, nonjudgemental people. I also took Sylvia Rayfield and ERI reviews and I did questions from nclex3500/saunders and mosby's delegation/priority book all before I failed the nclex. I am now reading the kaplan book in which I have never read before and it is enlightening but I don't think that I will take the review course. I also plan on taking the review course online at ncsbn.

Good luck sweetie and I pray that things get better for many that are in our boat!

Hi, Roseshea:

I am in the same situation with you. I graduated from nursing school with high honors and always the top three students in my class, but I failed the test at 265 Qs. I had two areas with below the passing standard, and the rest of areas with near the passing standard. I think I overconfident about myself at the beginning. Plus, my parents came to visit from China, so I couldn't concentrate on my studying. Rather, I was thinking to show them around and trying to get rid of the test as soon as possible. I will retake it in late Sep or early Oct. Good luck to us!

I love this forum because I found so much useful tips and everyone here is so supportive to each other. Thanks a lot for this wonderful site.

By the way, can anyone tell me about Suzanne plan and her contact information?
