What field did you pursue or were thinking of pursuing before nursing? Why did you end up choosing nursing?

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

I always wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember. I am one of those older nurses who had 'the calling' have read on other threads recently that nurses dont get 'the calling' anymore.

I worked in lots of things before I nurses I taught TEFLE, I worked in my parents businesses. I set up my own business at 21yrs but it was with my ex at the time and we split up later so lost interest in that project.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I worked as a CNA for 18 years before getting the nerve to go back to school. I always wanted to be a nurse, just didn't think i could do it. I went to cosmetology school in '95, had 6 months left when I quit, just didn't like it. I LOVE being a nurse though, wish I would have gone to school sooner.

Like the previous poster, I was "called" to nursing.

Worked over 20 years in various areas of nursing-family practice,

psychiatric crisis intervention.

I initially went to school and finished a BS in Management/Computer

Science. Wanted to obtain a BSN at the same school and

work designing computer programs for nurses.

Sorry to say the Dean of Nursing was not open minded (in the 70's),

so she squashed my BSN plan.

Truth be known, I always wanted to teach dance and I am

currently pursuing some avenues in that direction !

Specializes in Emergency, Trauma, Critical Care.

There were so many things that I wanted to be. I ended up becoming a nurse because I wanted to help people. And I get to. But I keep an open mind. I actually wanted to be in the military, but I medically disqualified. So, this was my next best option. I like it.

Specializes in oncology.

I was a nursing school drop out at 17yo, I did it because my parents wanted me to, not me.

At 35yo I was called back to nursing in a divine ( with a capitol 'D') dream, it was very moving, when the Lord calls you can't put on the answering machine, you got to pick up the phone.

I have been happy about His decision for me ever since. He led me to oncology.

i knew i wanted to be a nurse when i was in jr high & was thinking along the lines of operating room. i've been an several positions but have never worked in the or.

i have never regretted my decision of becoming an rn. i sympathize with those rns who have not been happy in this profession.

Specializes in Nursing assistant.

I never knew I wanted to be an nurse. I had many people tell me I should be. Now, when I think of developing other areas, they just seem second best to nursing. You know what I mean?

I'm like Mad, I never wanted to do anything else. There was a time when I thought I'd changed my mind and wanted to go into early child development, but I saw the error of my ways before I wasted too much time!!!
