  1. keep in mind that minimal qualification for teaching in the clinical area at a.d.n. level is a bsn. instructor usually does not lecture, as msn is required (california). note, however, that those instructors who are in their 50s following students in the clinical area find the work exhausting. also there are vn & nursing assistant programs where one could teach that may have different educational requirements, ie, bsn not required.
  2. my rn friends and i are all married to engineers!
  3. i have several pairs of crocs. i use them around the house - cleaning, washing my car, gardening. love the way then can easily be washed & cleaned. two pairs have the straps at the heel which feels more supportive than without the straps.
  4. introduce yourself and explain what you're doing thru-out the procedure, regardless of the pt's loc. keep your patient covered well. water on the skin before drying is chilly. use friction to create 'suds.' let me explain this further. one of my favorite relaxing past times is getting massages. nothing is more irritating to me than a very light massage touch. i am more tense after the hour than i was going in. so long firm strokes when you bathe feels better than light touch. if your pt is awake & alert & is falling asleep during his/ her bath, then you're on the right track! last, but not least, bathing is a great opportunity to assess your patient, physically and emotionally.
  5. if you're planning on going into an adminsitrative positive, the bba and adn degrees seem like a good combination.
  6. my birthday is in april. turned 17 yrs old then graduated high school that june. went righ into diploma nursing program (3-yr hospital based). i was very innocent and naive. graduated at 20 yrs old & started career as nurse. went back after 10 yrs for bachelor's degree. another 17 yrs later, went back for my msn. i am now teaching in an adn program and enjoying this phase of my life very much!
  7. dear healer 27, congratulations on your new addition. one positive aspect of nursing is the variety of jobs, hours, & facilities that are open to you. have you thought of working part time or per diem? when my children were small, i worked 2 - 3 days / week. it was enough to keep my skills up. if you don't need the benefits, per diem provides you with the independence of working or not. keep in mind, however, that there may be minimum hours / month that you must work. just something to consider. best wishes to your family!
  8. vicky rn - great pagers on site. thank you very much!
  9. Great idea but narrow the subject matter to something very specific. Use the above concepts to specific situation of your choice. Otherwise you'd go bonkers trying to write on such a broad topic!
  10. i still remember our pinning ceremony. i started tearing when we lighted our florence nightingale lamps and said the florence nightingale pledge.
  11. several years ago, while i was going down the stairway, md and rn were kissing on landing (both married to others). they quickly pulled apart when they saw me. i said a quick 'hi' and kept going down the stairs. i never said anything to any one about this. the md is still at hospital. i have not seen the rn there in a long time. if patient care is not affected, then i mind my own business.
  12. what about developing critical elements organized based on your class objectives? example: if systems based, each system would be further divided in applicable physical assessment techniques for particular system , e.g. inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation. scoring can be in #10, 20, etc. elements (easier to grade for passing % score). =/> 75% satisfactory; 70-74% needs improvment; below 70% unsatisfactory.
  13. you can check the vn & rn board for nclex % pass rate for any accredited programs. go to links on top right, select boards of nursing.
  14. i chose a topic i was passionate about and used the same topic through-out the msn program. i tweaked the focus of my paper based on the requirement for each class: patient focus, family focus, community focus, etc. this made it easiert to write my papers because i had majority of research done and only had to add a few articles as needed.
  15. hi bob, i posted this on another forum. thought you might be interested in article. with retiring boomers expected to cause a shortage of skilled staff, employers are making it easier for them to stay. here are five sectors where employers are eager for experienced workers. excerpt from msn money article link:http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com...dlovingit.aspx keeping nurses on the job is imperative. because it's such physically demanding work, a number of hospitals have begun to install mechanical lifting devices to help nurses move patients. to help fill the 200,000 nursing jobs projected to be open by 2010, nursing schools nationwide are creating accelerated programs that award degrees in 12 to 18 months for professionals who hold a bachelor's degree in another field. rr, a 54-year-old former marketing executive with a degree in economics, is taking advantage of such a program at case western reserve university. r was always interested in health care and decided to change careers after caring for his wife while she was ill with breast cancer for six years. she died in 1999. r, who became an rn in january, is on his way to a doctorate in nursing. he says he finds the work "very fulfilling, intellectually challenging and stimulating." mf is a career changer who is benefiting from an in-hospital training program at yale new haven hospital (no. 5 on aarp's survey). f, 51, laid off from her flight attendant job in 2003, entered an accelerated nursing program in bridgeport, conn. she graduated in may and was immediately hired into yale new haven's nine-month training program for operating room nurses. "i am being paid a full-time salary while they train me," she says.
