Jobs worked to get through school

Published

While I have been in nursing school I have worked numerous jobs to pay the bills. (Nursing school hasn't been cheap). I have worked in a survey call center, been a CNA, worked at an amusement park, and am currently delivering pizzas. What odd jobs have you worked to get through nursing school?

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiac, ICU.
I worked as a medical secretary/medical assistant to get through nursing school, as a med/surg RN to get through undergrad program in French Lit, Home Care RN to get through law school and am now back to being an RN!

I drive a school bus for the mentally handicapped. Pick them up from group homes and took them to their day program. Great job while doing my pre-reqs. Will try to work as a bus driver while attending the nursing program by doing field trips and sporting events. Lots of time to study.:coollook:

Working as a CPR/BLS/lifeguard instructor for the Red Cross.

Specializes in Step-down/tele, home care, corrections.

I was a tree climber during pre-reqs (still a State licensed arborist, but getting way too old to do this), and I'm currently a truck driver. When another truck breaks down and needs to be repaired, I give up my truck to the other driver, since we don't have spares, and I'm considered a part timer because I leave early to go to nursing school. Part time means from 6 or 7AM to 3PM,M-F! I can't pay the bills on a CNA or student nurse extern salary, so I guess I'll be staying there for a while.

Specializes in ICU/CCU/CVICU/ED/HS.

Worked as an E.M.S. services Manager...20 employees, 3 ambulances, a couple hundred square miles, lots of good calls(experience-25yrs) and STILL had time to study;) . Would I do it again....:jester: What do you think?:biggringi

I have worked as a medical assistant, a CNA, and now a phlebotomist (helpful with experience starting IV's). And now it is over I am officially done with nursing school!!!!!!!!!!! My pinning ceremony is May 12th. I know it seems like it takes forever, but hang in there it will be over before you know it......and it will be worth it

I worked as a forklift driver and a CMT. I don't know how i made it through school without falling asleep everyday. delivering pizza would have been nice.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I work as a veterinary assistant, a CNA, and a cat-sitter. I may try to get a a PCA position in a hospital per-diem this summer. Two more final exams to go before senior year! WooHoo!

:studyowl: I worked at a farm stall every weekend and school holidays. When the farm stall had no longer casual employees, I babysat for 2 years.

Since starting my pre-reqs I have worked at a check cashing store, Home Depot, and a casino gift shop (until Katrina). I haven't been working the last few months, but I am looking to get a job in a hospital while I am waiting to start RN program in January.

I worked as a phlebotomist while in nursing school at a hospital. They were very flexible with my schedule for my classes and I could work evenings, nights, and weekends. The best part of it was since I got to go to every unit to do blood draws, I networked and got to know a lot of people. When I graduated, I was offered a job immediately. It was also a good learning experience as far as what lab tests are ordered, why, and what are normal values. It also has made it far easier to start my IVs.
