Jobs worked to get through school

While I have been in nursing school I have worked numerous jobs to pay the bills. (Nursing school hasn't been cheap). I have worked in a survey call center, been a CNA, worked at an amusement park, and am currently delivering pizzas. What odd jobs have you worked to get through nursing school?

I also delivered pizzas the first 3 semesters and during prereqs. I now am a tech at the hospital and clean my MIL's office on Saturdays. You are right. Nursing school sure isn't cheap.

Right now I work full time (40hrs/week) in marketing while I am taking my core classes (bio, psych, etc..) when it's time for clinicals, I expect I will leave my job and get a lot of loans! If they will let m e work part time at that point it will be great, but I am not going to hold my breath.

I wish I could work night in the E.R. again as a tech. But around here (in Texas), you have to have EMT cert to do that and I am not about to waste my time adding on that. I am not working right now, wish I was.... I need $$$$$$$$$. I am doing pre-req's now too, and it seems to be moving sooo slow. Phewwww

Specializes in Cardiac, Acute/Subacute Rehab.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones...I've been with my employer for almost five years, and made the decision to go back to school a year ago. My boss is SUPER supportive and allows me to get my hours at my leisure, provided all of my work gets done, but I try to keep it as "normal" as possible (i.e. working classes around my job, at least until clinicals). I'm managing a Dental Lab (dentures, partials, etc.), but we're also producing a Latin Festival for our city (Columbia, SC).

All of you are right. It's not cheap, and some days, it's really not easy to study, work, go to class, deal with husband and kids....Why are we doing it? Because we really want to be nurses that bad, and nursing school won't last forever.

Hang in there, everybody!!

I worked in the human service field while in school. I was a residential group home worker serving adults with mental retardation. I worked the overnight shift and I could SLEEP! There were two of us on shift and I made less money but got to sleep. I was there in case of fire/evacuation or medical emergencies. The agency even paid part of my way through nursing school. It was a great arrangement for all.

I've worked at Wendy's for the past 3 years (high school till now when I'm done with my pre-reqs). Unfortunately I'm planning on working there until I graduate, it's pretty good because since I've been there for so long I basically make my own schedule. BUT, i've called a local hospital and asked if there's a job there that I might be able to do to try and get more experience in a hospital setting...if not, burger flippin it is for 2 more years!!!

I have worked since the start of my BSN program as a security guard, State Farm Intern and now finally an EMT at a transport ambulance company. This I like because I am interfacing with hospitals all the time and besides they pretty much let me go in and make my ownschedule. I was thinking about going back into security though at an assisted living facility around here because many times you also serves as first responder also.

I worked as an EKG technician, a ward clerk, and a nurse's aide.

Specializes in Surgical/Telemetry.

Ooh boy, I have tended to work quite a few parttime jobs at once to get enough hours but still have flexibility around classes. Medical transcriptionist, medical library assistant, medication aide/CNA, x-tra money by delivering phone books, private viola/violin instructor... now an SNT at the VA. The eventuality of 1 full-time job sounds great!

I am working at Macy's. They know I am going to school and I can schedule around that. Plus, I get to know what it is like to stand on my feet for hours!

Specializes in Family.

I worked as a CNA while in school.
