While I have been in nursing school I have worked numerous jobs to pay the bills. (Nursing school hasn't been cheap). I have worked in a survey call center, been a CNA, worked at an amusement park, and am currently delivering pizzas. What odd jobs have you worked to get through nursing school?
Why did you give up Law?
I needed to support myself while studying for the NYS Bar Exam, so I went back to home care nursing. Turns out that it is virtually impossible to work while studying for that exam. Without any family support, things just kept getting worse financially. I worked in Alzheimer's care x 10 1/2 years, then did some PACU and home care. I'm now a combination of Office RN and Supervisor at a major medical center. Much less stressfull, better hours than law.
worked pushing trolleys at the mall, serving at a petrol station, stacking books at the library, counselling at a community health care centre and call girl at night (seriously)... all at different times of course, but a lot do overlap. later i plan to work in market research and picking cherries over the summer break.
p.s. i work 2 & 1/2 hrs away from uni/home for night work and wear a wig so that i dont have the worry of running into an ex client.
I decided to enter nursing school around the same time my XH and I were about to settle community property. I lived in our house for 6 years after divorce with my 2 sons. When it came time to sell the house my X wanted to by me out. So, we made an arrangement that he would pay me a salary each week so I could quit my job and start school. It worked out really well, and he still paid me after I became a nurse for about 2 more years.
We are friends and always said we would keep everything related to our divorce simple and on a mature level. Result: We have a wonderful family, our kids and grandkids, his wife's kids and grandkids. In early 2005, we all took a family trip to Disney World. We all evacuate hurricianes together. And, now, we are all putting our lives back together and repairing our homes. We are scattered right now but that won't be for long.
I think the biggest thing that has come from this is, we have set a good example for our kids. No fights at birthdays or holidays as to who gets to visit etc. We all work hard to keep our family together.
Sorry this may be a little off the subject but my heart is a little heavy right now because of all we are going through.

Grandee, Iam sorry things are rough....but keep you head up and it will be ok soon.
I want to thank everyone for their great input(gave me some ideas), so i decided to go to Dominoes and apply today. She is checking my background and will call me next week. I need all the money I can get. IT's hard paying for classes, let alone all the books that go along with it. HELP>:selfbonk:
MR group homes, weekend doubles and all the study time I needed during LPN school. But agency nursing has been a life saver ever since (especially now I'm back in school)...pick where and when i want to work...sure there are bad facilities but some are complete cakewalks and you can study (think 3rd shift occupational clinic)! And I only need to work 2 days a week to make what I earned working full-time in LTC! Agencies hire CNA's, too, if you are one....
Part-time jobs included: grocery cashier, nightclub waitress, swimming & sailing instructor, barnacle scraper, and accounting clerk. If I had seen any way to convert any of the temporary marina jobs into long-term positions, I might have dropped out of nursing because the paychecks and the fringe benefits were marvelous.
Try Workforce, Pell Grant, State Tuition Assistance, ManPower, Loans, Friends, Roommates, etc. Do anything you have to do to get thru this (within reason, of course). If you believe in the Lord then lean on Him and consider it done. Do it afraid!! Best wishes!!
This is the best advice!!! Thank you Dianalynn- there are a lot of people out there who need this advice.

Pizza Delivery. It's a fairly 'mindless' job and my program used lots of 'lecture' material that involved previously tape recorded 'lectures'. At the beginning of every module, we had to bring in about 10 tapes to be recorded off of fast speed recorders.
I'm sure the internet makes such things easier and CD these days - if programs still do that.
But, that being the case, a cassette deck and lots of driving time meant that I was getting paid to study. And tips meant that I was bringing home 'cash' every night -- and ramp that up by working extra when necessary. (and ramp it down before major tests).
And besides, Pizza places ALWAYS need help and are therefore willing to work around you. I imagine, with the price of gas, that THAT is even more the case, now.
