Since you work two jobs, you might have noticed something I've noticed when JCAHO comes by: what is NOT OK at one facility is totally ignored at another :confused: .

Also, it is amazing what they think is important: what is in a care plan that no one ever looks at, NOT the fact that we only have ONE sink in our 6-8 bed (read 2-3 nurses and up to 8 sets of parents all needing to wash, wash, wash.....) NICU rooms :eek: .

I could go on and on about why my BP skyrockets when those idiots are coming. :angryfire

My favorite JCAHO story--after a much-feared and much planned-for JCAHO visit had ended a few days before, I noticed a nurse manager sitting alone at the nurses' station in an unused and otherwise empty ward, surrounded by hundreds upon hundreds of charts which she was going through.

I asked her what she was doing, and said, jokingly, "JCAHO has left the building now."

She looked up at me wearily and said, "Now I have to go through all these charts that we locked in the basement during their visit and get them all in shape, in case they have a follow up visit and notice that they were not on the wards when they first came through."

The facility passed JCAHO, of course, as we knew it would. And JCAHO found a few "problems," as we knew they would, for how else could they justify their coming.

Not much different from the IG visits in the military, before which we spent a few weeks getting everything shined and painted instead of doing our jobs.

By the way, it might be fun to be part of a JCAHO team for a year or so. Just to see the fear in aministrators' eyes, if nothing else. And you'd get to travel a lot.

Well we just survived another JCAHO visit. We always do, but the terror they spread nationwide, the mock preparatory surveys, communicating with other hospitals to find out what is current on their inspection lists, the endless meetings, the educational meetings of the staff, so they know what the right answer is to give at any time. And the list goes on.

Do they actually accomplish anything, outside of spreading terror nationwide. Life was simpler whem all we feared was the IRS. the KGB, the FBI/CIA..............

JCAHO is a threat to the health and safety of our patients!

I'm all for inspections of health care facilities, but JACHO has the most whacked out priorities.

JACHO is such a joke, they tell administrators when they are coming and what they are looking for. Administrators in turn make sure staffing is good, supplies are plentiful, hospital is clean,etc... Once they are gone it is back to the same old ways, poor staffing, not enough supplies, dirty hospitals. Also I worked in a Fl hospital that hid patient charts because so many needed Dr's signatures for verbal orders, such a joke I say.

You're going to love this - in our recent JCAHO survey I was short numerous supplies because TPTB didn't want the unit secretary to order stuff that we had no place to put where it looked "neat." So I'm running all over the hospital to other units to rip off basic supplies (because we have time to do that.)

What I`ve always thought of as weird, is that the hospital Pays...and a lot...to be put through the torture......One jacho feller was following me one day to see the steps we go through to hang blood, even went to the bedside, so I told the patient" This is a government offical, observing how we follow our policies on hanging blood"....hung pc,left room, and was cornered by "offical" who haughtily informed me that 'JACHO is NOT government" :eek: Well, my feelings on that statement is .....If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.........

Until they start doing it the right way....unannonced visits, it's just pure money exchanging hands B.S.

It is inexcusable that the hospital gets advanced warning. Just makes these JCAHO looks like JERKOS.
