January OBLC Army Nurse Corps

Published

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone here is supposed to attend OBLC this upcoming January (2009). Not 100% at this point whether I will be or not, but figured it wouldn't hurt to start trying to make some contacts. My commissioning package was supposed to meet the board in August but I guess there were some fixes that needed to be made so I was placed on the back burner. Was told that my package is supposed to be before the board today though and should hear back by next week (pretty exited right now). My wife is currently active duty AF Nurse Corps, but is in the final stage of securing an interservice transfer to the Army Nurse Corps and we both hope to attend the January OBLC class.

Hope to hear from some of our future classmates soon.

Again, I think what I said a few messages back has gotten misconceived. someone asked me about what I thought about a training program. I looked at it and I gave her a alternative. Basically, what I said was just get out there and see what you can do and you will increase what you can do over time and you WILL NOT get injured doing it. Isn't that the key component here. I agree that everyone in the military should be in their best physical shape, to be honest I was at my bf's unit last month and was appalled at the shape of some of the officers that were in the unit. When I asked about their being allowed to continue to be "employed" I was told it was because of the "position" they held that they were allowed to continue to be there, they just get counseled every 6 months and that is that. It's kind of like seeing a fat cop isn't it. 1% of the US population is in the military. if they are all overweight or if even a half or a quarter is overweight that's pretty bad. Thank Goodness it's not true.

I know what I do when I run or lift or do anything workout wise. I go all out. What other people do is up to themselves.

I never said I was too old! I ain't dead yet. I go out with the intent to kick ass!

(I've done better marathon times than people half my age)

If you're looking to slap someone's integrity you'll have to look elsewhere because this girl ain't taking the hit.

Have a great day.

I am doing Stew Smith's routine's for running and passing the PT test. My current fitness program consists of me doing Stew's running routine I started walking a few minutes running a few minutes and each week I decrease my walking by 30 sec to a minute. Right now I'm down to walking one minute and running 4 minutes. I do this Monday/Wed/Friday. Tuesday and Thursday I take a water aerorbics class and do the situps and push ups. On Saturday I take a high impact cardio and step class and on Sunday I focus on weights, sit in sauna maybe do laps in the pool.

Here is an article I thought was interesting.

As far as the age discussion. My father retired 22 years and his last 7 years he was a army drill sergeant. He retired in his late 40's. My father woke up early in the morning ran pt @ Ft. Jackson, ran home woke my sisters and I up for school got us to our buses and was all done before most people had a cup of coffee:yeah:. I think its all on how much you can keep in shape because now my father is in his late 50's and the last time I was home he had me run to see how I was doing. Well that man ran passed me and had me out of breath:eek:! So, the drawn out point I'm trying to make is age dosen't matter there are plenty people 30, 40 and 50 plus who will run circles around the youngins:up:. That is why I am working my butt off so they won't run me off the track in a few months!!! :bluecry1:

:yeah::yeah:this is exactly what we have been referring to. :yeah::yeah:

i don't believe any of us think of ourselves as "old", i surely don't. i always have the mindset that i can perform on par with any 20 something. the point is as you get older (i did not say anyone is old) you cannot push your body to perform at x level quite as quickly as someone who is younger. yes, the older person most certainly can perform just as well as the younger person... no one has even hinted otherwise. but the older (again not to be read as "old") person just needs more time to reach that level of fitness. i personally learned this the hard way! 2 years ago when i began an exercises program (because i knew i wanted to come back into the military) i approached that program like i would have when i was 25... why not, that's what worked for me then... and i payed the price. for the next year i suffered from shin splints and my running program took a nose dive. not sure if you've ever had shin splints, i never had before that point, but they are not fun. because of that personal experience there is absolutely no way i would suggest for anyone to approach a new exercises program in any way but slow, steady and controlled.

i still don't believe anyone here has ever had any intention of aiming for and never surpassing the minimum apft scores. at this point the only safe option for some of the individuals is for them to realize that their initial scores may only meet the minimum, and that has been the point all along. no one ever said to be happy with the minimum or not strive to improve. when anybody has been sedentary for an extended period of time and they begin their physical preparation 2-3 months before oblc (i agree you should start earlier than that) you cannot push them too quickly. the whole point has been to help our fellow future soldiers to reach a point where they can at least pass their initial apft without causing themselves harm.

Hi guys,

The "old" reference probably came from my response. I signed my posting "cindy, the old lady".

I quite agree age is not an excuse to perform below our best (safest) ability.

I won't lie, some days I don't want to do anything.... I am tired and just want to rest. Probably it is more due to the fact of working 50hr/weeks plus graduate school and AR.......

Though, I might add.... when I do take a few days off.....my running times are faster !

O.k., I feel like a complete idiot asking this, but I really don't feel like looking back through the 100+ posts we have on this string :). Which of us are heading to Ft. Sam this January? Not sure if the AD and reserves share any instructional time there, so If you could reply with a AD or reserve reference that would be great.

I am going this January, AD.

I don't want anyone thinking after seeing this post that we don't want them posting here if they are not going in January. We have had some really good discussions from everyone on this string and I don't want it to end. I just wanted to get a clearer picture of who the January people are :)

I couldn't have said it better. Yes I will give the pt test my 100% but I am not going to set myself up for failure and expect 100% on my score. My job is to set a good example for our soldiers but more important, give 100% in caring for our most precious Americans--our soldiers!!! That is something we all can agree on (or I hope so) or we wouldn't be doing this. If this is not your reason-- to serve our men and women who risk their lives for our freedom, then you are in it for the health care for govt. health care for the wrong reason. Please lets just keep them in mind. I hope and pray that if my boys were injured (please God keep them safe) I would rather have someone with the right knowledge, care and compassion taking care of them then some one who is only worried about 100% rating on pt. Lets all stand together for outr troops and stop worrying on who is the best. Just do your best in all areas and we will all be successful.
