January OBLC Army Nurse Corps

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone here is supposed to attend OBLC this upcoming January (2009). Not 100% at this point whether I will be or not, but figured it wouldn't hurt to start trying to make some contacts. My commissioning package was supposed to meet the board in August but I guess there were some fixes that needed to be made so I was placed on the back burner. Was told that my package is supposed to be before the board today though and should hear back by next week (pretty exited right now). My wife is currently active duty AF Nurse Corps, but is in the final stage of securing an interservice transfer to the Army Nurse Corps and we both hope to attend the January OBLC class.

Hope to hear from some of our future classmates soon.

My obsession with getting all the details as soon as possible is catching up to me now... all the familiar faces on here are now already going to OBLC... well I will meet some new faces in the time before my turn arrives.

Good luck to all of you, and keep us posted as to your experiences!!

Not to stir this topic up again, but i would like to make the comment that it CAN be intimidating for us 40+ who are looking to join the Military. I am prior service, but still the idea of trying to compete physically with people half my age, gets you to thinking crazy thoughts. Bottom line is that if you do your very best, and exceed the standards, then you will be fine... get as early a start as you can and keep it up. Much like a career, physical fitness is an ongoing process which we all continue to try to improve upon.

Best wishes,

LA40

i am currently here at oblc and i have to say that we have a great mix of individuals who are in their lower 20's and a lot of us who are in our 30's, many who are in their 40's, along with several who are in their 50's. it really has not been intimidating to any of us. the oldest person here is 54 years of age. the difference that we see between the younger and older ones are their desires to go out (younger) and have fun until late in the evening/early in the morning. the older ones (30+) like to go out too but we do not do it to the extent that the younger group does. not that it is a bad thing; it really is the only difference that i have seen here. i have to say that as far as physical fitness goes, you would be surprised if you think that there is a difference as far as the age groups goes...there really isn't.

i do have to caution to those that are coming to oblc in january, as well as those that are coming to future classes. what you see on here from previous classes regarding oblc will change, they have instituted many changes with my class and a lot of new ones will be on the way. some of them will be beneficial, others will not.

i wish each and every one of you a memorable journey as you will enjoy your experience here at fsh, even if you have some bumps in the road. it has been interesting seeing the transformation that many have gone through. i was told by a prior service member that when we go into the field and then are finished, there is a change that comes over many and it is a great sight to behold. for those of you that are from different branches of the military, please keep in mind that it can be frustrating for you (as many in my class are saying) but in the end you will be able to smoothly transition.

best of luck! hooah!

I have not been to OBLC, but plan on starting paperwork with a recruiter Jan 2009. I have, however, been reading the posts to this forum for a while now.

You mention changes to the OBLC structure. Can you elaborate as to what they are?

Thank you :nuke:

Hey GetnPhd

Thanks or the info. Just came back from Walter Reed for my physical, pretty sure I passed. The rest of my paperwork should be ready this week to submit. Now I have decided to go back to school too. Your news about OBLC sounds like what I expected but surprised to see so many people older than 40. Thats fantastic! Hoping to talk to my recruiter after the thanksgiving holiday to find out best benefits. Very, very excited about joining and hoping to go to training next September.

Typical Army though, got to Walter Reed and found some of the wrong papers in my packet and then found someone else's papers. So glad I was smart enough to make all my own copies and keep them with me at all times during process of physical. Just laughed to myself and said" yep everyone warned me" Good tip for all those just starting the process!

Best of luck to everyone!! Hooah!

Stay strong ! We all need each other!

jams,

the classes will be held off post, the training will be three weeks at camp bullis. there will be more formations, even though there have been a lot of them while i have been here. there will be more drill and ceremony. the confidence course is no longer available, and neither is the grenade course. those are just a few of the changes that are scheduled for courses after this one.

No confidence course :( O.k., now I bummed.

Hey LA40,

Glad you are still around too. Just looking into going back to school again, making date to talk last min. details with recruiter and finish paperwork. And to all who are at or recently went to OBLC please continue to give us details!! Best of luck to everyone!!

Good luck to you 2soldiers44!! I am just now halfway through the first year of my BSN, so I have a long time to go yet... Who Knows what changes will transpire between now and then... I hope I will still be able to get my loans paid off...lol ;)

Keep in touch,

Any of you all who attended the January OBLC care to share your experience with the rest of us?

Hello Dee Tonia,

Truth be told, it was pretty easy... especially if you had any sort of military background. absolutely nothing for anyone to be worried about. The course work was Army 101, which anyone with a college degree should have no problem with. Like any military training the cadre will walk you through everything if you are having any trouble. Show up being able to pass the PT test and you will have made things easier on yourself. If you have an overseas assignment just know that you may be in jeopardy of losing it if you can't pass the PT test. For those in our class who did not pass the PT test the second time around their assignments were changed (those with overseas assignments... Germany, Korea, Hawaii, Alaska).

We had a great time, learned some interesting stuff and met some outstanding people. OBLC is nothing to be worried about. Just show up ready to learn and with a good attitude (no matter what your experience).
