ixchel's 3/7/16 What Have I Learned This Week, with A Lil' Help From My Friends!

Published

So, yea, where is our girl, ixchel?

ixchel is working like the Rockstar that she is, and asked me to fill in for her. I know, I know, it's already well into the new week, so this will be short and sweet. Or will it?

A couple of nights have passed since I've talked to ixchel. We usually go 24/7. Before I realized she was working like she was, I couldn't get in touch with her. I was actually worried. Like, more than a little.

I've learned that my online friends are most definitely my real friends. Lines are blurred. I text my RL friends and I talk to my Online friends. (I actually knew this- but this week's worry popped it up for me.)

I've learned I need my AN School Nurse Co-Workers, but that my RL Co-Worker, in the form of the Social Worker that shares my office, is gold. Like Ponyboy Level Gold.

I've learned that my friends know I worry, and humor me thusly, by checking in with me PRN.

Except ixchel. For days on end... :nailbiting:

When ixchel needed help this week, of course I obliged. The problem is, I really haven't learned much. I called on some of my friends to help me out:

From Dogen: "Ummm... I learned that people with schizophrenia were targeted by the tobacco industry, and that they funded research saying the people with psychosis were somehow resistant to cancer and also that it was critical to their recovery to let them smoke. Both of these lack evidence, but are still widely held beliefs, such that psychiatric hospitals were exempted from a federal ban on smoking in hospitals.

But really, people with schizophrenia are 4.5 times more likely to get lung cancer, and have 30% higher mortality rates than smokers without a mental illness."

Hmmm...

From WellThatsOod: "I just learned that vomited strawberries looks like jam!"

:woot:

From OldDude: "I've learned my fellow nurses don't mind stepping in to defend the perpetuation of reason and support of their peers from those whose statements are unreasonable and inciteful."

(We gotchu.)

Thank you guys for helping out. Love ya. :inlove:

Sports start this week in my HS. So many kids, coming down in pairs and groups, making sure their friends are appropriately cleared. I've learned that these kids know what teamwork means without setting foot on the field.

Some of our posters have been through a lot lately. DLHWB with her patient that killed himself. Poopycat with her new grandbaby (grandkitten?) Students starting school. Illness. Deaths. Weddings.

We have been helping each other here. We get flack for the snark, but I'm feeling the love.

(Just call me Farawimp.)

The theme is friendship, mental illness and the lack of good treatment those patients receive, vomit and strawberry jam, and sticking up for one another...or anything else you have learned.

So, What Have You Learned This Week?

I learned that I appreciate the 4x yearly oral exam I get at the dentist when I have my teeth cleaned. A friend of mine just had a lesion removed from under her tongue as well as a node dissection. Ugh. She only goes every 6 months based on her insurance. Had what she thought was a chancre sore or a coffee burn. Not so much.

I learned I am going to call my dentist. I have really good teeth and I never get cavities, so I tend to let it slide.

In fact, I've let a lot slide this past year.

I've never heard of getting dental exams q 4mo. I'm sorry for your friend; I hope she stays healthy.

When I was getting the root canal, I learned about the glory of nitrous. The staff told me to just "do yoga breathing." No. I was sucking in that stuff as if my life depended on it.

When I go back I'm going to have to ask the staff if the dimmd the lights and played pink Floyd or if that was just the nitrous.

Actually, it helped me gain a bit of perspective on why the great group of nurses I work with will suddenly seem frustrated or annoyed.

So, What Have You Learned This Week?

I have learned unconditional friendship is real, and I've never been more thankful for it in my life.

Haven't read beyond the OP (yet), but felt this needed to be mentioned first.

This week I learned that I have ADHD. Talked to my doctor and we are trying medication and its already working extremely well for me so far. I noticed that my concentration and focus is sooooo much better with it. Before I felt foggy ALL the time and couldn't concentrate long enough to get stuff done. My boss already notices a difference in my work. She said I'm a little more motivated and organized which is good. I also learned that the pharmaceutical companies are insane. My doctor initially prescribed Vyvanse and it came with a $245 pricetag. My eyeballs about fell out when the tech told me what I had to pay.

Yup, Our dental allows for 4 cleanings a year! Thx for the good thoughts, she is an amazing person and friend.

Yeah, the brand name stuff is VICIOUSLY expensive. I'm glad you got a diagnosis and that you are feeling better!

Speaking of dentists, I'd rather jump in a volcano.

But, oddly enough, I went to the dentist today for a filling. I have an unnaturally tiny mouth and there are large spaces between my gum and teeth, so I'm more prone to cavities. It looks like a silver mine in my mouth.

I learned that I know more than I think when it comes to nursing stuff. I've become much better at guessing answers accurately.

Pancreatic cancer has a poor prognosis because it usually isn't diagnosed until its later stages.

Job hunting sucks. Looks like I'll be waiting for my MI license before being seriously considered for jobs up there.

I really want to work in ICU when I graduate. Just not sure I would be hired in fresh out of school.

You will be if you are flexible and you look hard enough. There are tons of places in this country that hire new grads in ICU. If you want more info when it's time for you to graduate, PM me, and I will be happy to tell you all of the ICUs new grads from my graduating class got hired in, where I got hired in ICU as a new grad, and both ICU jobs I'm currently working now, one of which just hired seven new grads and the other that just hired three. I am firmly convinced that anyone can work in their dream specialty immediately after graduation if you are willing and able to relocate to where the jobs are.

I learned just now that I got gypped. I went to an epilepsy symposium last week and didn't get any cool neuro swag at all. At least they fed us!

I thought I saw somebody from my PRN gig at said symposium, so I asked him about it when I saw him next, which resulted in great hilarity from everyone around who heard and a new nickname for me. I am now Noggin, because everyone else says when they run into someone, the way the question is phrased is, "Didn't I see you downtown last week?' or "Didn't I see you at that bar?" and not "Didn't I see you at the epilepsy symposium?"

I also had several people ask me if I drink alcohol or get laid ever. LOL. We are a little low in the education department at my PRN job, clearly, but that's okay. They have taken me under their wings as the poor girl who has no life. I got greeted with a scream of "NOGGIN!" and a hug the second shift I worked down there this week, so I'll play up my pitiful no-life status because it clearly increases my likability.
