ixchel's 8/15 This Week I Have Learned...

Published

I have learned that I seem to be the "Go To" when my AN friends are butt tired and need a post posted...and I like that.

I've learned that I miss the girls (and guy) on the School Nurse Forum.

I've learned that tomatoes are hardy.

I've learned that tears help sometimes.

I've learned that my mom is one of the strongest people I know.

Hmmm, I haven't learned much, but the week is still young.

I'm sure ixchel will check in. No worries. In the meantime...What have you learned this week?

I learned my limit for caffeine. Not pretty. I thought I was dying.

How much did you have??

Once again that no matter how tough you think you are, you're gonna lose a knife fight if you're the guy without a knife.

I learned my limit for caffeine.

There's a limit? Source please.

I have learned that packing the youngest child up for college move in day for the finial year is not as painful as it was the first year.

Working for a living really messes up the golf game.

Giggling 5th graders c/o stomach ache immediately after a lunch of spicy foods and sweets are just trying to get out of class. ( they were laughing way to much to really be sick...and the food they brought in the lunch boxes!! )

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That's all I got for the week :)

I don't post nearly as much as you guys but I hope I can play...

This week I learned...

â–ª Driving home from the hospital after spending many hours at the bedside of a loved is very dangerous when you can't seem to stay awake

â–ª Stopping at a nature preserve to rest your eyes is smart but disconcerting when there are other people around.

â–ª Watching too much ID (Investigative Discovery channel) makes you paranoid anyone you encounter could be a killer.

â–ª The recliners in the ICU rooms are a great thought but they try to kill you when you lean back...if you shift around too much the chair suddenly snaps forward, nearly flinging to the floor.

â–ª While mgmt and admin make me roll my eyes, the nurses, techs and therapists, etc. at my old place of employment are still great. Somebody get them a raise! And more staff too, please!

â–ª I am starting to post more here and I find myself becoming more assertive and opinionated. I am of often snarky and sarcastic ~ Dare I say SNARCASTC? ~ LOL

â–ª Not watching the news and seeing what Jacka - I mean Trump is saying now keeps my blood pressure at a healthier level.

Think that's all for now. Thanks for being here and being awesome, y'all! It feels good to know a place has so many people I can identify with and/or learn from.

Specializes in Oncology.

This week I learned:

-Sometimes its impossible to get pyxis access at job #2

-Having chemo experience and an OCN will get you your chemo check off at job #2 before you're even off orientation

-Not doing blood return checks during and after chemo makes me extremely nervous.

-Pheresis catheters are crazy!

-A patient can be fine all day until they decide to unexpectedly go into afib at midnight.

-Some surgeons are really mumbly when you wake them up at midnight.

-ATG is one hell of a drug.

-Its really sad to see a patient's family member convince a patient to continue treatment when they're obviously dying. We've been caring for her for three years! Where were you this whole time? You haven't seen what we see! I didn't know she had a brother! We were so close to getting home so she could spend her dying days with her daughter! Argh!

-Sometimes a grumpy husband just comes off as grumpy.

-Sometimes you can't say no to pastry offerings from patients, because when you say no they'll try to give you two instead of one.

-I'm thankful for slow ED nights when I'm the first one to get an admit

-I love spending time with my favorite coworkers outside of work

-I love the fact that one of our CNAs wants to work oncology when she's an RN.

Never done this before, but they're always fun to read...

I learned that moving is exhausting (duh!)

I learned that moving into a three-story house after a lifetime of living in one-story houses or apartments will make your calves sore after just one day. Excited for the free workouts, not just for me, but also for my morbidly obese cat, who is loving the stairs!

And I learned that going with your gut and spending the cash on the more expensive moving company is in fact the right move (pun intended). A quick and efficient crew, who doesn't even complain about the fact that you're moving on the hottest day of the year into a house with no A.C., can save you from tearing your hair out.

Sorry for gushing, we're just really excited to finally be in our dream house!

This week I've learned..

1. I should not have reactivated my Netflix account. I remember why I gave it up.

2. I am not good at cooking or baking. I really hope my future husband is a chef.

3. I should exercise more.

4. I can't control others' actions, but I can control my own and my responses to those actions.

That I REALLY need to interact with every single new hire RN/LPN at my facility, because apparently they think it's ok, when a Hospice patient is imminent, comatose and unresponsive to verbal and tactile stimuli, to do a sternal rub.

A freakin' STERNAL RUB!!

As in, grind your fist into the center of their chest and then chart "moaning during sternal rub."

Seriously?? 😡😡

Wha...why???

Wha...why???

Yeah-this is the second time I discovered it had happened (different patients). First one had a fist-sized bruise on her chest for a week. She had just been having a don't bother me day, and wouldn't open her eyes or talk. The second one is imminent.

I've asked the Unit managers to tell the staff this is neither necessary nor ok.

Next step is the DON and/or Administrator. I don't like to take things that far, normally, but people, please! A little common sense!
