Has anyone taken Microbiology online? What is it like? Do you think it is possible to do well in that? I would never take ANP online but would consider Micro, but is that foolish? Any and all info would be extremely helpful, thanks!!

congrats! i told you there was nothing to worry about if you got in at valpo! gary just takes forever to do anything. we are just now getting our handbooks and we've been in school for 2 months! the program is great, and hopefully you get mrs. d. our clinical director even said she is the best instructor in the state. she's tough but you will learn so much from her. i feel as if i've been in school for 6 months already! we're already doing foley's and all the trach care, wound care, and pretty much everything else our pt's need (besides passing meds, that's next semester) at our clinical. if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me (i'm only 1 semester ahead of you). congrats again, and just be ready to work your butt off!!

thank you so much. you have already given me so much information and i am so thankful. i am so excited and i know it will be a lot of work ahead. what are your thoughts about working maybe 15-20 hours while in the program? i have a part time job and i am unsure what i should do.

thanks again!:bowingpur:nurse:

it all depends on what kind of student you are. if you can remeber things (very specifically) after only reading over it once then you could maybe get away with working that much and still get decent grades. most of the people in my class work part time, and have children so they are very overwhelmed and just barely passing. see how it goes with fundamentals, which will be your first 5 weeks. after that is when things get extremely stressful. so if it's tough for you then, i would say working once you start med-surg/clinicals/pharm is gonna be too much. there's a lot more "homework/paperwork" that has to be done each night after clinical, and that will take up most of your night (my monday clinical paperwork took from 530p- 1230a). fundamentals was a piece of cake compared to what we have to do now. if working part time isn't necessary i would definitely say don't do it. they'll tell you that at registration too. they recommend for us not to work at all, or no more than 12-15 hrs per week. you'll figure out what's gonna work for you once you get started.

Congrats to all those who are getting good news! Hope no one is still waiting.

I'm taking Micro right now in a face to face and I could not imagine doing it online. It is very intense and even though the lectures wear me out, I learn a lot from them. Micro entails less memorization and more critical thinking than A&P, so you really need to understand the concepts.

I guess it would depend on what kind of learner you are.

I agree it depends on what kind of learner you are, however I couldn't imagine taking that class online. I worked my tail off in that class and managed a B. The class is really great and I had an awesome instructor! There were several things she taught us that I did not get out of my A&P classes that have carried over into the nursing program. I also agree that it is a very intense course! Good luck on whatever you decide!

I really like micro, especially the labs. I would think that labs would be something that would be skimped on if you took the class online. As far as I know only Terre Haute Ivy tech offers it online and you go all day one Saturday for labs. I just couldn't imagine doing that.

I know that in APHY right now, missing 2 labs really messed me up on the last class. I have made it to all for this section for the muscular system and feel like I have a really good handle on everything and won't need to feel rushed to study study study as much as I did for the last test. Lab is what helps me grasp the concept of everything. I don't think I could do it online! My science classes are what I save for face to face every semester, everything else I seem to do okay with online. But then again, its my learning style for that specific subject.

Ahhhh I got to shadow a nurse last night for 4 hours and it seriously was such a great experience. I was able to stand in on a c section and also watched about an hour or so of a lady partsl and it was so cool. Watching a c section was honestly the most interesting thing I have ever seen. For some reason I got lightheaded at the end...I wasn't grossed out- I think just the standing for so long got to me, not being able to really move around. But I was able to look at the placenta up close and watched the doctor do the incision in the stomach and uterus. So neat! Seeing how the nurse I was with interacted with her patients really sealed the deal for me, really made me feel like this is something I really look forward to doing :)
