I was wondering if there would be interest in starting an Ivy Tech thread for those not in any program yet, for those still working on Pre-reqs.
I am taking anp102 in the fall in BLoomington, Tech writing online, plan on taking my Teas sometime soon. Going to apply to several campuses for the ASN program.
They have added Intro to Chem and changed the Math pre-reqs now for Ivy Tech ASN as of Fall 08. They are going to grandfather Math 111 for a few semesters supposedly.
new pre-reqs from Campus Connect:

It will cost $315 plus the $40 technology fee. So $355 total.
I took Math 118 this past term online. It wasn't too bad except for the probability chapter which I had a hard time working with. I don't know anything about 117 but I think that it might not be offered online. Not sure on that.
I am waiting to hear back from an advisor, but hoping to take the online MATH 118 this June. Does anyone have an idea as to how much I can expect the class to cost???ALSO, MATH 117 or MATH 118...any suggestions as to which one is the easiest?
inspired,
I took MATH 118 online last summer and I found it to be a great class. I was an absolute math phobic before taking the course and had never had an A in math in all my life. The reason I think it's a great course, first of all, is because it prepares you incredibly well for the TEAS. Almost all the math on the TEAS is covered in this course. Also, it goes through several different, mostly practical, math topics, but doesn't get incredibly in depth with any one thing, which makes it not too tough. The online format was great because we got to use our books, notes, homework, etc on every quiz and test, and if you take really good notes and show all your work on everything, you should have no problem. I don't know if I would have done as well had I taken the live class, but I definitely recommend that over any other math course. HTH
mhnice, I'm just curious--did you have any proctored tests in math 118? I just took it online in spring term and we had to go to campus for 2 proctored tests (and were provided a note sheet with some formulas on it to use during the test). All the tests, quizzes, and homework that we had to do for a grade were in Course Compass. Did you have to do any pencil and paper homework and send it in the mail? I did not have to do that. Or did you have to write out all your work on the tests and send that paper in? At our proctored tests we were given paper at the testing center to use to write down our work, and then I believe the proctor sent it back in the mail to our instructor. I was just curious if it was different when you took it because from your description it sounded like it might have been a little different before.
I agree with you that it was good preparation for the TEAS test.
Ok, I am kinda freaking out! I have just signed up for the condensed Summer 09 ANP 101 course today and when I got home and went to order books, between the books and the lab kit it will cost about $530!! Is that right??!!YIKES!! I am paying for this out of pocket and simply just don't have that! (Will try to get financial aid for fall classes) I had NO IDEA it was going to cost this much!! Does anyone know where I can get cheaper lab kits and books? I am afraid I am going to have to drop the class. I am also worried because I started reading how hard ANP online was, not to mention that I am taking the 8 wk course...was this just a total mistake? I was hoping to get all my prereqs done soon to apply for Jan. 2010 nursing school, but wondering if that was just wishfull thinking.
Hi inspired, well if you are taking 101 this summer and have not taken 102 yet, you won't be able to apply for Jan 2010 start anyway, so you might want to just take 101 in the fall and then 102 next Jan. and you could apply to start in Aug. 2010. In order to apply this Sept. for the Jan 2010 start, you'd have to be taking 102 this summer. That is because they require a semester in between finishing 102 and starting nursing school. So if you took 101 this summer and 102 in the fall, there is no semester in between your 102 and nursing school in Jan.
If you do take 101 this summer, I can say that the lab kit is not really necessary. (unless they changed the class a lot from when I just took it online in Spring 09). The textbook and Course Compass code is necessary for success in the class but I really did not use much from the lab kit i.e. I did not do the dissection of the cow eyeball or sheep brain.
Does anyone know where I can get cheaper lab kits and books? I am also worried because I started reading how hard ANP online was, not to mention that I am taking the 8 wk course...was this just a total mistake? I was hoping to get all my prereqs done soon to apply for Jan. 2010 nursing school, but wondering if that was just wishfull thinking.
InspiredN2nursing, There are several online sites offering textbooks considerably cheaper than the bookstore. I typically use half.com. To insure you're getting the right book, search by the ISBN #. Now, getting that ISBN number from Ivy Tech is not so easy! They don't make it available online, for that very reason. I usually go INTO the bookstore with pen & paper, write down the book name, author, edition, ISBN, as well as a physical description. That makes you an informed online shopper. To give you an idea, I think I paid approx $250 for my A&P books. Probably could have paid less, if I'd shopped sooner!
Craigslist is also another good source. Search by "Ivy Tech ANP102" If you find something there, just be sure to use common sense... meet at a public location for your transaction..pay in cash..inspect before you buy, etc.
If you've never taken ANP, and are taking a full semester load... 8 weeks might be pushing it. However, obviously people do it. (not me, though!)
Hope that helps!
Thank you for your quick responses. Now that I know I won't be able to apply for Jan 2010 school, the pressure is OFF!! WHEW!! I am just going to drop the class and take it in Aug, in a classroom! I think I will do better that way anyway!
Also, I will look into the tips that you suggested for cheaper books!!
I feel as though a load has just been lifted off my shoulders!
Thanks again!
Speaking of Aphy... Has anyone here successfully (gotten an A) taken 102 in the summer? I did OK in the Spring with 101 in Indy and thought that I would be able to handle the expedited version. I am starting to have some doubts about my abilities now that it is a few courses in and am looking for some feedback. Anyone try it?
